Major ice storm from Oklahoma to Illinois
Roads were treacherous Monday from the Plains into parts of the Northeast as a storm spread a coating of ice and freezing rain that blacked out more than a half-million homes and businesses.

At least 13 traffic deaths were linked to icy roads.

Oklahoma utilities said some 400,000 customers were blacked out as power lines snapped under the weight of ice and falling tree branches, and utilities in Missouri said more than 100,000 homes and business had no power there. Roughly 11,000 were blacked out in southern Illinois.

4. get generators now before its too late

Storms like that can keep power down for 2 weeks easy. Even a little generator to just power the frige, a couple of heaters, and lamps can make a world of difference.

5. I'm in Tulsa
Streets are very passable - that's the weird thing. The ground temperature was high enough that the ice didn't stick to the ground so it stuck to the trees, power lines, etc. A lot of power is still off. I work for the company that handles the website for Tulsa airports, and I had to turn off the auto-update functionality on arrivals and departures as changes were coming in quicker than the time frame for updating the info.

Power went out on my side of town at around 8:30 p.m. last night, snapped back at 1:30 a.m. (I know because when my power goes off and then on, the burglar alarm goes off) and went off again 5 minutes later. Work had power so I went in at 9:30, but before I did, I was clearing my driveway of branches that had snapped off my tree and went inside to get a pair of gloves, and when I approached the door again, a hundred pound branch fell onto the spot where I had just been.

Fortunately, I have a fireplace so I'll be getting that going tonight if I still don't have power.
