Anti-Gay Carolers Allowed To Sing In Front Of Target

SACRAMENTO - Christmas carolers wearing shirts advertising anti-gay principles drew bespectacled looks from store patrons as they sang outside of a Sacramento Target store....

Officials said that the carolers said that they were peacefully protesting a new California law that prohibits discriminating against gays in school curriculum.

The store put out a no-loitering sign and called the police, but officials said the carolers were allowed to stay, as they hadn't broken any laws.

3. I'm guessing this is the Phelps clan...again.
I don't want to see the video.

They're fucking, batshit, off the charts insane. It's sickening, disgusting and despicable. Shameful no longer applies, because they have no sense of shame.

They're an evil cult and the sooner they all die off, the better the world will be.

riled up? They are most definitely worrying about the wrong things; someone taught them this mindset of hate. It is disgusting.

15. That's the part I don't understand. It's private property.
The police can't come and say the "carolers" have a right to stay.

The police have no jurisdiction, other than to keep the peace.

I don't get how they were allowed to stay, when Target doesn't even allow the Salvation Army bell ringers.

7. Stop whining and RETALIATE!
Edited on Mon Dec-10-07 03:35 PM by rocknation
Get a bunch of carolers to SUPPORT the new California law that prohibits discriminating against gays in school curriculum! As for not breaking any law, it sounds like trespassing, harrasement and restraint of trade to me, since the ruling has nothing to do with Target. Or put another way, I doubt that the carolers would be allowed to do this in front of a school!

19. I wish you wouldn't characterize this as "whining." It's a
little insulting.

Gay people have every right to be furious about the constant harassment and assault against our civil liberties.

And that's puting it mildly.

26. Like how? A counter-demonstration would be fine if
the protesters are there.

Otherwise, it would make no sense...especially since it's already a law.

It would be a different story if the law was threatened or it was a proposed law.

10. What about trespassing?
If they were outside of the store, they were on store property. What are the trespassing laws in California?

23. It's private property. That's why the Salvation Army bell
can't just show up, because Target says they're not welcome.

California Law

For many years, Target has enforced a no-solicitation policy at our stores nationwide to protect our guests from being subjected to persistent appeals when shopping at our stores. We believe we have this right since our stores are located on private property and are operated for the purpose of providing our guests with a comfortable shopping experience.

To challenge our solicitation policy, petitioners sometimes claim a right to gather signatures or engage in other expressive activity in front of a Target store based on Robins v. Pruneyard Shopping Center, a 1979 decision of the California Supreme Court. While that case found that California law provides some protection for "free speech" activities at shopping centers that constitute a public forum, it does not give petitioners unlimited access to retail property.

11. WTF is their major malfunction???
Why do they think that we're not entitled to the same rights and protections under the law that they are? They take it for granted that they should have freedom from discrimination and hate-crimes, yet fight like crazy to keep us from having it. I just don't understand the depths of their hatred and intolerance.

And why protest outside a department store rather than, say, City Hall or another government building?

If it's legal for the hatemongers, it's legal for people advocating gay rights.

and not winning any converts to their way of "thinking," I'll bet.

How many converts has Phelps won over with his God Hates Fags crap? I'd venture to say none. In fact, he's been called The Most Hated Man in America.

I think that would be the best counter protest there could be.

The Chorus is beautiful and the music that they would make would outclass any of those heartless creatures who have forgotten the teachings of the one that they say they are honoring at Christmastime.

who wrote that story? They used the word "bespectacled" (bespectacled). I would suppose he meant bemused or maybe bewildered but it would seem like a professional reporter would either know or look up a word he isn't sure about.
