GORE: "If I did get back into the political process, it would be as a CANDIDATE for PRESIDENT"
Edited on Mon Dec-10-07 11:45 AM by Stephanie

Al Gore just said it! Asked if he was running, "I have no plans to run." Would you take a position in someone else's administration? "No. If I did get back into the political process, it would be as a CANDIDATE for PRESIDENT." - Oslo, 12/10/07

15. Well, they announced the winner several weeks ago.
But it's new that Al Gore mentions in public the possibility that he might be a Presidential candidate at some point in the future.

I must say it's very unusual timing to mention this possibility, because presumably he wants the Democratic nominee to win the election in November 2008 and then win re-election in November 2012.

I guess his point is that we should not expect to see him serving in a cabinet position, which is kind of a shame.

92.  No, because he didn't say that
He didn't say his political aspirations ARE anything. He stated in his words that after being in this game for thirty years that he wouldn't accept anything less. I would say that is a normal reaction from someone who has been VP and in administrations before. I don't think it is anything earth shattering and I think he said it to answer the question honestly. But of course, those who don't seem to give a damn about anything else the man does and needed their red meat yesterday because him just receiving the prize was really just so boring jumped on this like he perhaps knew they would. After all, he hasn't even been a blip here since he told draft groups to stop their harrassment of him. Should he ever enter the political process again I myself would expect him to run for nothing else. It is simply him stating a fact based on his experience. It wasn't him giving you some sort of clandestine signal about 2008. So yes, My God, let's just discuss this instead of the huge impact he is having on the world which is just so boring.

103. I see your posts a lot here on DU. I am interested in knowing what
forms of leadership Gore will use in the future if not the presidency? Books - I read them all - teaching - he has done some of that. There are only so many awards one can win and reaching the world is not so easy. We listen now but if the media drops him like they did before what is his forum?

106. The forum should be you
Edited on Tue Dec-11-07 01:23 PM by RestoreGore
Good enough answer I hope. And point out where I ever stated in the future that the presidency couldn't be a form of leadership? You see my posts here but do you actually read them? I already stated in the one you responded to that I agree with him that if he should ever enter this political fray again that he should serve no other post but president. But that to me right now is not the most important factor to be discussing in light of the crisis we face now. If through his stature and his resources he can do enough now with OUR HELP to change this political process by using US as his forum, then perhaps in the future he might consider reentering the political fray. But that will never happen unless we do our part, which I don't see being discussed in these threads for all of the talk regarding supporting this man.

From Political Mavens, Seth Swirsky, 11/28/2007:

"Whether you agree with his Global Warming stance or not (I don’t), or whether you think he should be wearing earth tones or not, Al Gore is by very far the most substantial candidate the left has and yet it continues to ignore him.

As a conservative, I’m glad."

25. He'd miss a lot of primaries that are already closed to him.
He'd have to have petitioned already to get on the ballot in several states, and he asked volunteers petitioning for him to stop, so he wouldn't be on the ballot in those states. Doesn't look good.

39. Don't give up hope
I know, we've all heard this line from Gore before; and I don't have any great insight into exactly what he means. But, it sounds, once again as if the door is still ajar. For those of you who haven't been following the discussion over on the Gore discussion site, I would suggest two things: 1/ go over there to see the discussion that has been going on about a possible Gore candidacy and 2/ keep your eyes on NH for a significant news announcement on Dec. 17. The announcement will not be from Gore, but it may have an impact on getting Gore into the mix for the 2008 election. Don't give up hope.

64. No.
You're right, the phantom forum is not going to happen. Gore's spokesperson said there was no cancellation because the thing was never planned. But, that's not the news that will be coming out of NH on Dec. 17. If anyone has time or $$ to donate, NH is the place to go or send some $$. They are soliciting through ActBlue: https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/entity/18577. All the money will go toward publicizing their effort and volunteers will be used to also get out the message. The message and what they are publicizing will be announced on Dec. 17. Stay tuned.

65. Believe me,
the folks at those two sites are sort of out of the loop at this point. The algore.org web organizers basically shut down petition efforts about 3-4 weeks ago and have been mostly silent ever since. And, draftgore.com has recently announced that they are going into hibernation. For all they did early on, they are not that active any more. I've given the link to the Al Gore '08 group on DU in a post just a few minutes ago.

I actually have a forward of your recent email in my inbox! Was thinking of posting it here, may I? You are hinting that there may be news on December 19. Can you tell us any more?

74. Yikes!
It's really a small world. Are you one of the people on my long list of algore.org on-line petition signers that I've been sending e-mails to - or at least know someone to whom I sent one of those? Sure, feel free to post it - but, be aware, the Dec. 19 forum is not happening (I call it the phantom forum); in fact, Gore's spokesperson said it was never scheduled. BUT, the announcement from NH will now be on Dec. 17. And no, at this point I can't tell you anything more, except if you have the time to volunteer get ready to go to NH in late Dec. or early Jan. (before their primary) or donate through ActBlue at https://secure.actblue.com/contribute/entity/18577. The $$ will go toward publicity for something that will make Gore supporters happy. Can't say more.

84. Isn't it true you have more fun? Or was that just exaggeration on the part of the hair dye lobby?
You look like you are having fun as you petition your government, and that's a good thing.

I like that phrase, "The blond treatment," I'm going to start using it to mean when someone attempts to con a rube, or more broadly , when someone attempts to bullshit someone else. For instance, someone could say, "The congressman gave me the blond treatment," meaning he treated me with condensension like I was an idiot. Conversley, someone could say. "I gave the Congressman the blond treatment," meaning I'd played dumb.

It would also be a good name for a band.

99. Works for me.
Though maybe we need another name for the reverse. The blonde treatment is the condescension and dismissal you get from others (as they steal your ideas). In reverse I think you could say, "I played blonde." :) Anyway, howdy neighbor! Native, homesick Montanan here!

to keep current on Montana issues and trends and it will either greatly increase your home-sicknes or it will sooth your MT jones. They also have a great list of Montana lefty blogs on thier front page, so depending on where in the state you come from, you might even find a hometown blog.

112. Don't let that stop any real efforts
I don't know the folks at draftgore.com but I have worked some with the folks at algore.org. They are the ones that pulled the plug on efforts in NY, CA, and MA to get Gore's name on the presidential primary ballots in those states. We were making decent progress in NY when the web organizers asked us to stop. Maybe that was a wise thing, maybe not. I do know that the algore.org folks are having a conference call tomorrow evening (I'll be participating - anyone else out there in on it also) to see if there is something else they should do. Draftgore.com seemed to basically be a place to donate money for their ads in the NYT and on TV, as well as a place to sign an on-line petition urging Gore to run. So, I'm not sure they had much more to do in the presidential primary business anyway, and, I guess they couldn't figure out any more ways to spend money so they said they would stop collecting any. I'm not sure what might come out of the conference call with algore.org organizers tomorrow night, but I'm going to encourage the coordinators of the web site, who are sitting on long lists of names and e-mail addresses of contacts in lots of states, to let those lists out to organizers in states where putting Gore's name on a primary ballot is still possible. The earlier reason for not doing that (his public, non-partisan appearances this week in Oslo and Bali) shouldn't be a factor any more. He may have other "non-partisan" events planned in the future, but the future of the earth and this country is too critical to let that stop us. If he truly doesn't want to run, then he should say so in clear terms and I, for one, will fold up my tent and stop all this activity and find another candidate to support. So, if any of you are in states that can still put a name on a primary ballot (NY's deadline is past as are most of the other super-Tuesday states) see what the rules and regs. are to get a name on (petition signatures, $$, etc.) and see if it's possible. We need to go to the convention with some Gore delegates if we are going to try to have them get Gore's name into the mix as a compromise candidate after Hillary and Barack finish punching each other silly. Keep the faith!!

87. Our dear Al Gore just said he would run, and be happy to claim
the title he has held since the treasonous decision of the Supreme Court in December of 2000. Most of us know it. Let it be true.

Thank you Mr. Gore for standing up for truth. May you live long, happy, healthy and wise, surrounded by loving family and friends.

Peace

97. I believe that was IF he was still in that mode, but IMO, he is NOT
I heard where his heart and mind are when reading his acceptance speech the same day.

Read that entire speech, and tell me if you agree... I love Al Gore for so much than I ever did when I was going door to door as a delegate for Bradley back in the day...

In my mind, there is NO grander task then the one is involved in now... and so evident in that speech... :web:

100. Gore is running
He's just not taking part in the beauty contest because he
doesn't have to. This cycle started way too early and I'm
pretty sick of the whole thing-and I love politics. As the
declared candidates knock each other they just look worse and
worser. I'm old enough to remember when the convention wasn't
a coronation and my bet is that it'll be wide open, and he'll
be fresh and hit the floor running...
