Former Vice President Al Gore summoned a grave assessment of the state of the environment as he accepted the Nobel Peace Prize in Oslo today, saying that the earth has a “fever and the fever is rising.”
Mr. Gore spoke urgently about the environmental crisis facing the earth, saying that the planet was in its “11th hour” and that the world community needed to mobilize in the same way that earlier generations had mobilized for war.
Mr. Gore, who devoted himself to his passion as an environmental crusader after his loss in the muddled 2000 presidential election, said humanity had begun to wage war on the earth itself.
“It’s time to make peace with the planet,” he said in the acceptance ceremony in Oslo’s city hall. “We must quickly mobilize our civilization.” He added: “Something basic is wrong. We are what is wrong and we must make it right.
