Anyone have Tinnitus
About five years ago I would off and on get a sizzle or ringing in my ears. Recently it is 24/7. I couldn't understand what it was. My mother used to say she had it.

Well I saw an ad on TV about a product that is supposed to help. It improves the circulation in the ears. I have also had allergys for years. A tickle that causes a cough and sneeze sneeze sneeze. I started taking this medicine two days ago and the sizzle is not as loud. The say it takes a while and that it improves the nose and throat. I hope so my sneezes are getting to me...Clariton, Zrytec, and all the rest allergy medicines are useless. So I hope this works. Has anybody else tried it..Lipo-Flavonoid.let me know.

1. Ouch. As a drummer whose played in heavy metal bands...
I can relate. I used to get the occasional high pitch ring more often until I finally began wearing hearing protection {gun muffs} when I play. I've never tried allergy meds though.

2. Never had it myself but....
First thing to have checked and rule out is high blood pressure which is often missed because ringing in the ears and/or headache may be it's only symptom before you discover hypertension. Then make sure you are not B vitamin deficient, This is best determined by just taking a good B100 supplament for a week (along with lacto bacillus sporogenes or yogurt for absorption) if those don"t eliminate it , I would add a supplement of mixed omega fatty acids. Find a chiropractor who can adjust your cervical spine if it needs it. Hope you get relief soon.

3. Years as a head-banger
left their mark. I've had it for years, but not badly enough to worry myself sick about it. If I'm in a room with a computer the hum of the fan drowns it out. However, I will watch this thread with interest. Good luck.

4. I have it. Have had it since 1998. Though mine sounds more like
tape hiss. It's louder in my right ear, and I hear it mostly at night, when it's quiet.

Many people claim that taking ginkgo biloba lessens their symptoms (I've yet to try it, though, and I don't think there is any scientific evidence to support the claim).

21. same here...hissing in 1 ear
.........some hearing loss occured...went to specialist and he said its the bones in the ear wear down with age.there no remedy except for some sort of operation......without insurance its way too expensive.....hell,, the visit and tests cost me over $800.

The hissing gets worse when I'm tired.stressed or when the humidity is high....which it is most of the time here.(FL)

5. I have it..
... it is pretty mild at present, only hear it when it is very quiet.

I blame mine on excessive enjoyment of excessively loud music.

I have a bit of hearing loss as well.

6. Another one here.
I've been putting off calling the specialist about it.

A friend told me he had it and had some procedure done (apparently incorrectly) that damaged his eardrums. The guy is a lawyer, so probably not the kind of patient you want to screw up on.
He's thinking about filing a lawsuit.

7. Take advantage
Of a free hearing test at a couple of those places that sells hearing aids. Easy way to find out just how good or bad your hearing might be.

8. Actually, tinnitus may be present with no hearing loss.
One doesn't necessarily have anything to do with the other. Apparently there are a lot of different reasons for tinnitus.

And welcome to DU.

9. Within the past year, yes! I was really scared but
I googled and finally realized what it was. I'm almost sure the problem began as a result of my excessive use of caffeine products. I can pretty much zone it out as long as there are other sources of noise (the daytime), but at night I have the most trouble. It's especially inconvenient when trying to listen out for intruders. And lately it seems to be louder. :-(

10. Like a whistling teapot inside each ear, 24/7
I tried Arches tinnitus "formula" last year, which had zero effect. I'm curious how a product could claim to improve circulation in only a targeted area.

11. you have a symptom 24/7, a symptom increasing in bothersomeness over 5 years, and you're on DU?
ask a medical professional, it's aga. DU rules to solicit for medical advice esp. in this situation where it's obvious that you want to use the internet as an alternative to seeing an actual doctor who, you know, might have gone to an actual medical school

i don't mean to be so sarcastic people but come on, a little common sense here

i would be willing to share my experiences IF you had done your part and talked to a doctor or pharmacist or anybody more knowledgeable than your mom and a TV commercial

18. The sad fact is only a small percentage of tinnitus patients can be helped by a medical professional...
It's pretty much a waste of time, but I have it and I did go see an ENT doctor to pretty much confirm what I already knew.

But hey, you never know.

19. If the OP is in the same circumstances as some of us here, it may
be an issue of cost that prevents going to a doctor for treatment of a condition that is considered a nuisance and not an actual severe health problem. Without more information, I don't think a scolding is appropiate.

12. I will try it!
Years of sitting in the orchestra in front of either the French horns or the trumpets has left me mostly deaf in one ear, partially deaf in the other but the one thing I can hear is the constant high pitched squeal in both of my ears. I hate it. I have learned to ignore it a lot of the time but it certainly does not help me when trying to listen to something or someone. It mostly bothers me during periods of rest in the music and I think it also makes it more difficult to keep my pitch where it should be. Thank you, I will try it.

13. I have had it for years. Most of the time it's just a hum that I don't
really notice, at other times it sounds like night time out in the country with all the bugs making noise. There are times when it suddenly ceases for a few minutes (that's when I really notice it!) and then gradually returns to the previous level. Most of the time it's just a slight background noise that I have learned to live with.

14. I have tried a multitude of vitiamines, herbs, and even a hearing aid at one point. Nothing seemed
Edited on Mon Dec-10-07 09:51 AM by IsItJustMe
to really help. I am sure it is different for everybody, because the causes are different, but there two things that I have found that do have a direct impact on the severity of it for me.

DIET and STRESS

I have to stay away from Caffine products and I try to keep my stress levels down. Meditation helps.

On edit: For me, a book called, something to the effect of, eat right for your blood type, was helpfull.

16. yeah, big time
haven't heard silence in a decade or more

squealing, clicking, crickets, you name it

some foods definitely aggravate it, as do loud noise. I wear ear protection when mowing the lawn, or else it is worse for a day.

I will be interested to see other responses/remedies (I've seen ear specialists already)

17. I have it really bad
A lifetime of working in industrial environments has left me with constant hissing that's loud and permanent. My hearing tests fairly good with a little high-frequency loss, but I have a lot of trouble discerning conversation if there is background noise. Carrying on a conversation in a public place is near-impossible. Doctors say there's nothing that can be done.
