Kerry @ Bali climate conference: The Senate need a roadmap and dates

(OK, so I did a search and couldn't find anything about this in English. Kerry-supporters, please chime in with links if you have.)

Kerry at the Bali conference:
- You can't at the same time say that this is serious, and that the scientists are right, and then just let it lay there. If you accept the scientific research in this area, you must also be ready to accept the prognoses and the consequenses, says John Kerry.
(...)
- What is important now is to get started. We have waited too long. For us in the Senate, it is vital to get a roadmap with a strong mandate, which also will set a date, hopefully 2009. This mandate must set a global path ahead, says Kerry.

He also puts weight on the 'two-degree' measure; that means that the global warming globally must stay below two degrees.

- The two-degree measure as a tipping point is important. We must work to keep the rise in temperature at this level, he says.
(...)
Last week, the Senate environmental committee passed a new climate law, which will now be tried in the Senate.

The proposal says to reduce the US carbon emissions by 70% within 2050.

- I can't guarantee that the law will pass, but I can guarantee that we will have the debate the next year, and maybe we will come to an agreement.
- I promise that we will work all we can in the Senate, and we will never stop because we all have a duty towards the future generations.
(...)
Just after Kerry spoke to the Bali delegates, the official US delegation held a press conference.

The negotiation leader, Harlan Watson, still maintains that the US will not agree to put the two degree measure into a roadmap.

- We don't want the two degree measure as a starting point. We want to limit the hold (this have) on the further process, says Watson.

- I think Watson should strengthen the arguments. The word 'commitment' must into the roadmap, and we must act globally, says Kerry as a response to what he thought about Watson's statement.

their asses with a flashlight and you think they'll make a viable road map?

Am I getting cynical mogster? :) :hi:

It is as if most of our reps don't get that we live on the same planet. We are the only major nation with no signature on the Kyoto Treaty, correct? Didn't bonehead 'erase' our signature, iirc?

Thanks to Kerry for speaking out, I respect many things he has tried to do, but as I said, good luck with that Senator.

2. Lol, no
You're not too cynical, only realistic, I think :hi:

There is so much going on that is way out there. But imagine what it would have been like to have Kerry for president? Reason and common sense instead of mindless self enrichment and corruption. He's a cool head, John Kerry. I do hope he will succeed in getting support for a new line, but it will of course be a long haul. Anyway, it's good seeing Democrats abroad, making their position known.
I think you're right on the Kyoto, the US is now lone nation of any mention not to sign.

#1! Sadly, it's for weapons sales, ignorance, torture, war crimes... Sigh.

Rah rah, little left to be proud of now, but still enough to maintain hope and keep up the good fight. :)

And we will keep up the good fight regardless, because doing the right thing for most matters to us!

Reality has pretty much sucked since 2000, hasn't it? lol

16. I feel as if we are fighting with air. We punch and kick and cannot
seem to connect with anything solid to win the battle.

I'm getting so tired of the heartbreak, the disappointment.

But never giving up until my last breath!

20. I couldn't even imagine Gore or Kerry giving up and NOT trying anymore.
They aren't wired to give up, even with most all of the newsmedia set up to deter them at every turn.

Sad truth is that if either one was a corporatist lackey they would have all the media cheerleaders they needed.

It does sound like Kerry speeches on this in the past year. Amazing that the coverage is so much better in Norway than in Boston.

PS My husband, Daughter and I visited Norway for the wedding of a Norweign friend - Norway is a fantastic country. (Did you know that Senator Kerry spent a summer in Norway when his dad, a diplomat, was assigned there when he in his mid teens?)

15. Hi!
No, I didnt' know that :-)

Thanks for saying that about my country, karynnj. It's nice to have Gore here as a representative of the US, and I sure wouldn't mind a re-visit from Kerry.
