Mess hall meals can be recipe for fitness disaster

ASAD, Iraq — Across Iraq, in dining halls the size of football fields, under glaring fluorescent lights, the array of food assaults the senses.

Pastries fill a glass case — and troops can have all they want.

Servers scoop ice cream every day at lunch and dinner.

And good luck fitting a vegetable on your plate after asking for a pork chop and receiving two, followed by a fist-sized heap of mashed potatoes or hush puppies.

If there is room for that vegetable, butter drips from the broccoli and carrots shine in sweet sauce.

Breakfast? You can have omelets, pancakes, waffles, bacon, sausage, grits, French toast — or all of the above.

But now, troops gain an average of 10 pounds on deployment, Brooks said, and a recent study that has not yet been released showed that troops’ cholesterol levels are going up after just 12 months in the war zone.

1. Interesting tidbit: Stress raises cholesterol also. Seems like if I were in a war zone,
I'd be eating what I wanted also though too. Be nice to have some plain food though, without sauces/butter.

2. Fundamentally, food is an anti-depressant,
at least until your clothes get too tight.

But really, think of the primitive concrete message, "You're not hungry." There is food that isn't only adequate, but all manner of the most pleasant food. "You're not only not hungry, but everything is fine."

But I'm wondering. Do they put out lots of food so that the guys out on the field who are losing weight can bulk up when they're back for a spell. If that's the case, then they need to remind people who are on-base all the time that they should not take so much

4. Small comfort
"Here, we're royally screwing you and your family, over and over again. But look - ice cream!"

Fucking ten dollar a scoop Halliburton ice cream.

The Army blames it on shoddy sewing. Sure sounds like them extra pounds might be the main culpert.
