Bush Raises Cash for GOP
By BEN FELLER – 4 days ago

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) — President Bush, on a Midwestern trip to raise Republican cash, stopped by a health clinic Wednesday long enough to tout the benefits of community help for the poor.

The main purpose of Bush's travels was a fundraiser for his former agriculture secretary, Mike Johanns, a Senate candidate in Nebraska. Johanns left Bush's Cabinet in September to seek the seat being vacated by fellow Republican Chuck Hagel.

Already, Johanns has raised more than $1 million for his campaign and is considered the prohibitive favorite in the race, with a hearty blessing from Bush. The fundraiser was expected to raise $750,000 at a cost of $1,000 for individuals and $10,000 for couples.

While in Omaha, Bush visited OneWorld Community Health Centers, a clinic that provides medical, dental and nutritional aid to poor people. Bush announced that his administration has exceeded its goal of helping launch or expand 1,200 such community health centers.

"The spirit here — the spirit of community, the desire to help people who are less fortunate — is prevalent," Bush said after chatting with health professionals at the site.

"People here feel a great sense of community and accomplishment, and as well they should, because community health centers, not only here in Omaha, but around the country, provide a very vital service," Bush said

1. Travesty and Tragedy
The shooting tragedy and the travesty of Bush's appearance in Nebraska soon hence. Crueler still is supporters of this madman induced into giving money to the Republican cause. Sad.

3. OneWorld = 501 (c) 3? - One of those so-called "Faith Initiatives"?

I'd like to see how much Faith they'd have if they weren't able to load up their boards with a lot of folks who get pretty good charitable tax deductions for their small amount "professional" time with little or no actual value added to the enterprise.

Just in case you don't get my drift, many of these are just another instance of "the good ol' boy's club" all dressed up as the noblese oblige.

4. Draft Scott Kleeb for U.S Senate (D)
http://draftkleeb.com/

Why Scott Kleeb?

Nebraska Democrats need a story to tell in 2008!

Let’s make Scott Kleeb that story!

Nebraska Senators have a long record of being strong, independent leaders on Capital Hill, and there is no reason to stray from that streak.

Nebraskans have seen the candidates from the Republican Party and are not satisfied.

10. Kleeb would run if he thought he could win.
I am starting to think he won't run. Johanns will win because the media tells people they like him. If the media would scrutinize him for the shitty job he did as governor, we might have a chance but they are quite unlikely to do that.

5. Don't you mean Wednesday DECEMBER 5, not November? In any case, one thing I'd like to know
is if we taxpayers footed the bill for this little fundraising trip, by virtue of the fact that he stopped by that health clinic to spew some drivel so he could claim it was government-related. You know, government program-related activities...

Johanns Says Raimondo Party Switch Surprised Him

Posted: Dec 5, 2007 10:07 AM CST

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) - Republican U.S. Senate candidate Mike Johanns says today he was surprised that Columbus businessman Tony Raimondo switched parties from the GOP to the Democratic Party.

The former Nebraska governor and U.S. Agriculture Secretary said "I don't know what he was offered to switch. Tony is a solid Republican."

Raimondo announced his switch yesterday, after saying last week he was considering a Senate bid as a Democrat after Republican Mike Johanns' entry into the race.

Johanns says he would welcome Raimondo back to the GOP and a Republican primary run for Senate today.

Johanns says U.S. food supply safe
Julie Bierach, KWMU science reporter

ST. LOUIS, MO. (2007-12-04) Former Secretary of Agriculture Mike Johanns was in St. Louis Tuesday to take part in a panel discussion on food safety.

Despite last year's recall of spinach contaminated with e-coli, the former agriculture secretary says he's confident the food supply in the United States is safe, but not perfect.

Even under the best of circumstances, you're still going to run into some issues, Johanns said. And what we can do as a government in those circumstances; get the alerts out quick, work with the people who are marketing that product, get it off the shelves.

The debate continues in Washington over whether there should be a single independent agency to oversee the integrity of the U.S. food supply instead of a joint effort between the USDA and the FDA. Johanns says he is not in favor of such an agency.

Bush visit allowed quick police action
BY KAREN SLOAN AND LYNN SAFRANEK
WORLD-HERALD STAFF WRITERS

President Bush's visit to Omaha on Wednesday resulted in a quicker and more organized police response to the Westroads Mall shootings, said the head of the Omaha Police Department's SWAT team.

Members of the SWAT team and other police personnel had been assembled Wednesday morning to provide security for the president's visit to a south Omaha medical clinic and a fundraiser for Republican Senate candidate Mike Johanns.

Bush's plane left Omaha close to 1 p.m., about 45 minutes before the shooting began.

Although some of the extra officers had been dismissed when the first call for assistance came in, many were still nearby and raced to the mall, said Sgt. Tim Carmody, who heads the SWAT and bomb teams.

"Based on what we know," he said, "I don't think (Bush's visit) could have prevented what happened, but it allowed us to respond faster, and we were able to efficiently clear out the mall."

11. Mayor Mikey is running for Chucky's seat? Damn, I remember
meeting Mikey at a party when he was running for Mayor of Lincoln when we first moved there in 1994. He was unimpressive then--and my opinion of him hasn't changed.
