Small error!
Oy vey! Pork for Chanukah?
The Greenwich Village gourmet grocery store, Balducci's, has become the butt of the Jewish holiday by advertising its boneless hams as "Delicious for Chanukah."
Manhattan novelist Nancy Kay Shapiro, 46, spotted the kosher faux pas while browsing the meat section Saturday at the chain's outpost at Eighth Ave. and W. 14th St.
When Shapiro went back Sunday, she took photos of the unorthodox display promoting boneless spiral-cut hams for $8.99 a pound, petite smoked hams for $6.99 a pound and boneless smoked hams for $6.29 a pound.
Instead of pointing out the mistake to management, she posted the snapshots on her blog to "amuse others."
"I just thought it was funny," Shapiro, a self-described "unobservant Jew," said. "I wasn't offended in any way. I just thought, here's somebody who knows nothing about what Jews eat."
Shapiro said that when she went back to the store Tuesday, the first night of Chanukah, the signs had vanished.
A Balducci's official was so verklempt about the error he didn't want to speak on the record. He fessed up that "it was a mistake," blaming it on a stock clerk who normally doesn't work the meat department.
He referred all other questions to the company's marketing department in Connecticut.

1. Let me tell ya'll something about my people, the Italians
We wrap shit up in pork. We don't go to the "butcher shop." We go to the "pork store." We take a pig, cure it, then slice it up and wrap it around a piece of fucking cantaloupe. A fig. Whatever. You name it, we'll wrap the fucking thing in pork. We have 800 varieties of what you people call bacon. We eat that shit up. So am I surprised that somebody at Balducci's would think the nice Jewish customers might like one uh dese here hyams for der holiday meal?

I'm surprised it wasn't a full window display with the Star of David shaped out of various strung salamini.

3. People would freak when I brought a Gladware tub of bacon or sausage links to work.
Now I can't get their hands out of it. And I am as Eyetalian as Moses.

5. Excuse me, but the REAL Balducci family would NEVER make this error.

They knew their neighborhood. I have no idea if the new owners have any Italian in them.

6. It's a joke
Geez.

And yes, I've been to Balducci's many times, being a New Yorker (though now in Chicago). Outer boros, though. Where the New Yorkers live. :-)

4. I wondered why Eyewitness News was taping on that corner.
Since when does a stock clerk do the advertising? Writing up descriptive messages for food is ADVERTISING. MARKETING. IT AFFECTS PERCEPTION. What idiot would hand that off to a stock clerk?

Let it be said that this is NOT the REAL Balducci's. The Balducci family sold the store and the name to these....dimwitted twits who thought the name was all they needed. They didn't even get the recipes. They thought, of course, that they could do better than the salmon mousse with the sliver-thin slices of lemon. WELL, THEY CAN'T.

The REAL Balducci's was a wonderful place. To this day, I just feel good all over when I hear a Perry Como Christmas song...because that's what they'd be playing non-stop at this season...in the REAL Balducci's.
