Col Ann Wright's sentance- DU, can others serve one's community service sentance?
As you all know I bet, Col. Ann Wright was sentanced to 500 hours community service and three days of jail, plus six months probation, for interrupting Petraeus's testimony, saying "Swear Him In" so that he would be on the record and could be held accountable. Congress now swears people in, finally, but then, they didn't.

My question is, does anyone here know if it is possible to serve another person's community service sentance?

This woman has give selflessly like crazy, been arrested over and over again, for us. I know that we could get her work done in short order together, even just a few networks of people. Is that possible? How can I find out?

Col. Ann Wright in Jail
Submitted by cactuspat on Thu, 2007-12-06 13:35. Activism | Criminal Prosecution | Nonviolent Resistance

Here's a couple email reports I recieved - first up from Lydia (CodePINK Tallahassee) who's at the CP house in DC for two weeks...

....Col. Ann Wright was sentenced to 6 months probation (the strictest kind you've ever heard of - she can't even raise her voice near the Hill) - it was a jury trial and just blew everyone's' mind in the room. Check out the video interview with Bill O'Reilly that Deidra posted for the group not too long ago.

When Gen Petraeus spoke in the Senate in September (not the House where I stood on a chair), Ann said "I am a diplomat for peace". She knows Crocker, didn't interrupt anyone.....it was profiling for sure.

The jury was selected in the morning. They found her guilty! (the judge was the same one who recently let Midge off with a $500 fine - Midge was back on the Hill the next day and the judge (a woman) mentioned that when sentencing Ann. "I gave your friend some leniency and she was back here the next day"... (Midge didn't do anything but go up there, don't even know how the judge knew that????)

WORST OF ALL, she also got 3 days in jail and they took her away, right there. She looked freaked out, had tears in her eyes. Her sciatic nerve has been so painful it's hard to walk at times. I wasn't there but the group that was came home bummed, bummed, bummed.

Send Ann your good vibes and love. They will give her credit for tonight and she should be home on Friday.....

Next another email report...

Hi All,
I'm forwarding this email to you because I think It's a terrible and scarey step toward what's happening to this country. If you don't know about Ann Wright, she's a former Army Colonel and Diplomat (29 years in service), who has been going around the country speaking out and writing for peace. She was recently turned away from getting into Canada (with Medea Benjamin) though she was invited to speak there by a group of Canadian MP's.

Corinne

From: NYDIA LEAF

Hi All -
Jenny called from DC to say that Ann Wright's trial today ended with her being sentenced to 3 days in jail, 6 months probation, and 75 hours of community service.

Ann had interrupted Gen. Petraeus' hearing in September when he gave his report to the Senate committee on the troop "surge" in Iraq. She had called out "Swear him in" so that his testimony would be under oath and he could then be held accountable for his statements. She was removed from the hearing room and Petraeus delivered a report.

Today was the trial and Jenny, Ann, Laurie, Joan and several others saw her being led away to jail.

I called Code Pink house and Samantha said they're trying to get more exact info...about an appeal, visiting times, time of release on Friday, etc. I've asked that Liz or Desiree email me details as they get it. I'll pass them along as they come but I intend to go to DC on Friday for the day.

Between this and the Canada-FBI list, it's clear the USG is determined to silence Ann.

12. Mahalo!
Just back from work and school, and so happy to see the responses.

It's really true, she has done so much and sacrificed so much time and work, not to mention her entire career. I think sometimes it must seem to those folks who do so much that they are alone, because we aren't there with them.

I wish we could do her service for her. Beside her is a good second. I'm on the other side of an ocean and a continent, but I hope we can really help her somehow.

I know Code pink could use support, that would be a tangible help. http://www.codepink4peace.org/

Aloha all.

Swear Him In!
by Ray McGovern

That’s all I said in the unusual silence on Monday afternoon as first aid was being administered to Gen. David Petraeus’ microphone before he spoke before the House Armed Services and Foreign Affairs Committees.

It had dawned on me that when House Armed Services Committee Chairman Ike Skelton (D-Missouri) invited Gen. Petraeus to make his presentation, Skelton forgot to ask him to take the customary oath to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth. I had no idea that my suggestion would be enough to get me thrown out of the hearing.

I had experienced a flashback to a Senate Judiciary Committee hearing in early 2006, when Sen. Patrick Leahy (D-Vermont) reminded chairman Arlen Specter (R-PA) that Specter had forgotten to swear in the witness, Attorney General Alberto Gonzales; and how Specter insisted that that would not be necessary.

Now that may, or may not, be an invidious comparison. But Petraeus and Gonzales work for the same boss, who has a rather unusual relationship with the truth. How many of his senior staff could readily be convicted, as was the hapless-and-now-commuted Scooter Libby, of perjury?

So I didn’t think twice about it. I really thought that Skelton perhaps forgot, and that the ten-minute interlude of silence while they fixed the microphone was a good chance to raise this seemingly innocent question.

16. Yes I remember
They are really cracking down. Makes me ill. Instead of telling the truth, they are penalizing those demanding the truth. :grr:

18. ann said "i am a diplomat for peace"
ray was the one who said "swear him in"- i wasn't there though so it is possible she chimed in. but i don't think that is what happened. inaccuracy drives me nuts. ann is such a great person, has really put her personal life on hold since she resigned during the run-up to the shock and awe brutal invasion of a sovereign nation. and here we have more saber rattling from the village idiot.

2. I don't know about others doing it for her...
but I *do* know that at least in Florida and Georgia you can pay off your community service. They figured it at $5/hr when I did it. I have a few friends who did this also. Some were even allowed to donate canned goods to a soup kitchen or church. I don't know if that still happens or not, as this was many years ago... it's something that she could check in to though...

3. I don't know but I would gladly
do anything to help her. She is an amazing woman and she was very kind to me in Crawford. I will always be grateful to her for her small but very meaningful kindness. I am certain she thought nothing of it but to me it meant the world.

5. Great question and suggestion Mahina.
She has given so much to this cause. Seems the least that could be done for her.

Perhaps her sentence could be lessened and/or overruled by another judge/hearing?

I don't know.

It's possible that other people could work alongside her in solidarity, depending on what her service ends up being.

I did that recently when one of my students had a small issue. Some of the other students and I went and helped with his work for camaraderie. We couldn't work the whole day with him, just a small spell at the end, but it was still kind of cool to share the punishment - it made it more like a cross between regular volunteer service, and a social event.
