Mittens Romney borrows from Dildo'Reilly : "The religion of secularism"
Edited on Thu Dec-06-07 04:39 PM by jefferson_dem
TNR highlights how this fucked-up passage from Mitten's "I love Jesus, too" speech today should play really well with the fundie crowd --

"No religion should dictate to the state nor should the state interfere with the free practice of religion. But in recent years, the notion of the separation of church and state has been taken by some well beyond its original meaning. They seek to remove from the public domain any acknowledgment of God.

Religion is seen as merely a private affair with no place in public life. It is as if they are intent on establishing a new religion in America--the religion of secularism."

1. "They seek to remove from the public domain any acknowledgment of God"

That's its original meaning. One does not need to peruse the private writings of Jefferson, Adams or Madison for very long to realize that. In truth, the seperation of church and state has become significantly watered-down in the subsequent two centuries. The Founders wanted strict seperation.

2. I thought this asshole just said religion was a good thing
Doesn't this mean that he should respect secularism if he considers it a religion?
or did he mean to say: "All religions are good, except the ones that I don't agree with"

4. Probably the later
I'm pretty sure Romney wouldn't be keen on seeing a devout Buddhist or Hindu or, heaven forfend, a Muslim become President either.

5. In the religion of securalism
You don't have to wear magic underwear (unless you want to).

I believe religion can have a role in your personal public life, just not political policy. There is a difference. Heck the fundies want political policy to tell you what you can do in private, based on religion anyways so Mittens whole argument is pointless.
