Railcars With Radiation Markings Worry Galt Family (BYOTF - bring your own tinfoil)
Railcars With Radiation Markings Worry Galt Family

The railcars turned up last Saturday night on a seldom-used rail line in central Galt. Ken Schmitz joked with his wife that they probably contained nuclear waste.

Heidi Schmitz said, "He was joking with me. He said, 'Oh yeah, it's something radioactive.'"

On Sunday the joking stopped when they discovered the cars had radiation warning labels. On Monday morning the train was gone.

The couple could find little information about the labels, and enlisted News10 to help. The cargo on board turned out to have been concrete and rebar from Sacramento Municipal Utility's former Rancho Seco Nuclear Plant and contained low-level radiation.

Plant manager Steve Redeker said he understands the couple's concern. "There's a train parked there and, 'Let's go look at the train.' And, 'Oh my gosh, it's radioactive and it sits there over the weekend,'" he said.

1. I'm sorry, but how is this news?
Other than being useful to keep people terrified and tuned to the evening TV, of course.

Hazardous materials are shipped via railroad? No shit. There are certainly trains coming through there that have a LOT worse than some mildly radioactive concrete. That doesn't mean that it's dangerous to someone personally.

5. Your first sentence says it all.
It's not news, but that doesn't matter any more.

2. Unnerving, to be sure. But I'm more worried...
... about all those railcars and trucks and shipping containters that aren't labelled.

What's in them?

:scared:

I really sympathize with the folks who were freaked out by the train, and it's great that they decided to investigate and publicize the incident. I'm an absolute radiophobe myself. Can't help it.
