AIPAC: Intelligence makes case against Iran
Edited on Wed Dec-05-07 10:10 AM by Tom Joad
AIPAC says a U.S. national intelligence estimate bolsters the case to isolate Iran.

The American Israel Public Affairs Committee was reacting to a report that the assessments by all 16 U.S. intelligence agencies, declassified this week, is that Iran suspended a nuclear weapons program in 2003.

AIPAC spokesman Josh Block told JTA that if anything, the report showed that Iran had advanced further than was publicly known.

"Far from acquitting Iran, the NIE reveals that Tehran continues to violate the international community's calls to end the pursuit of the fuel cycle and the ability to make highly enriched uranium, concludes that Iran has utilized and has at its disposal a hidden, secret second unacknowledged, unmonitored track for enriching bomb fuel, and has engaged in a nuclear weaponization program, an assessment never before made public by the American intelligence community," Block said. "All in all, it's a clarion call for additional and continued effort to pressure Iran economically and politically to end its illicit nuclear programs."

there you go. now you still think attacking Iran is off the table? think again.
Just some food for thought. aipac has its main conference in DC every spring. during its 3 day extravaganza... more congresspeople are sitting together in that conference room than at just about any other time.

the problem with aipac is not that it supposedly supports Israel (it is "pro-Israel" in the same sense the Republican Party is "pro-American"). there is nothing wrong with supporting other people. I spent much of my life working against what was called "US interests" and instead supporting the people of South Africa, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Panama ....

the problem with aipac is that it supports extremist militaristic policies... that are bad for the US, bad for Israel, and catastrophic for many more. But somehow, even many liberal congresspeople seem willing to give it support.

about time that changed. here in oakland, they are having their annual membership dinner. every politician gets invited. many attend. we are asking them to decline. in the meantime, we will be outside with our agenda:
Global nuclear disarmament. Including the US. Including Israel.
No attack on Iran.
Fairness for all in the Middle East.

http://www.stopaipac.org/oaklandprotest.htm

if you live in the SF Bay area, be sure to stop by.

oh yeah, you might want to check out this thread about an influential DC think tank, Washington Institute for Near East Policy, an outfit that grew out of aipac (was headed by the same person who once headed aipac)
they say that Israel and the United States should begin an intense dialogue on ways to deal with Iran's nuclear plans and should examine ways to attack Iran's nuclear facilities.
http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=389&topic_id=2395637&mesg_id=2395637

one final note: to the people who say: Israel should attack Iran... i hold you in the same esteem (or lack thereof) as the people who say the US should attack Iran.

34. We pay them 3 billion a year, they kick back 100 million or so in election money
to make sure that 3 billion keeps coming.

What's so hard to understand? It's a classic case of corruption. It just happens to be a foreign government on the receiving end of the largesse.

Well, if you were looking for folks who know about

16. Color Me Not Surprised
I was wondering when warmongering push back would begin. If Israel wants to go to war with Iran, as a separate and sovereign nation that is their choice. They should stand on their own two legs and leave us out of it. Of course there is every chance they would be as bad at this attempt as they were on the Lebanon fiasco.

35. If Israel goes after Iran, we'll follow shortly.
Count on it. We've got a large military presence within striking distance of Iran, Israel doesn't. Who do you think the Iranians will retaliate against when Israeli jets, using information provided by us, flying over airspace controlled by us and under cover of our diplomatic protection (which we will most certainly provide) bomb their country? They'll attack us, for sure, most likely through not-so-covert support of the anti-US insurgency in Iraq.

Israel absolutely has the power to drag us into invading Iran, and they know it.

33. AIPAC is not a PAC
and thus is not subject to any of the FEC transparency laws.

This lobby group is the veritable poster child for DC Corruption.

But of course that also makes them a wonderful microcosmic mirror for the illegitimate state they represent.

Fuck imperialism and fuck racism as the basis of a nation.

are illegitimate. It's just ridiculous to go there. The history of the world is one of bloodshed and conquest. I don't like AIPAC but I don't like the lobby for big oil one bit more.

39. what an asinine remark.
fuck anyone who plays that sleazy game. Noting that the history of the world is steeped in blood and violence is hardly condoning it. Only fools don't realize that. You can't undo history, pumpkin. Most people can't even learn from it. All one can do is recognize what the hx of the nation state is, and make amends as best as possible. You can't just dissolve the U.S. or Israel or dozens of other nations.

41. We ARE fast becoming an illegitimate nation.
When we fail to respond to the voice of the people, which is happening more and more each political cycle, we also become http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Consent_of_the_governed">illegitimate.

""Consent of the governed" is a political theory stating that a government's legitimacy and moral right to use state power is, or ought to be, derived from the people or society over which that power is exercised."
