I'm usually a pacifist but...
Edited on Tue Dec-04-07 10:24 PM by hippywife
this makes my fucking blood just boil! For those of you who missed the story on NPR's Morning Edition today where they talked to a round table of Iowa voters, please take a moment to listen to the comments of Republican voter, Gretchen Kaufman, at 2:40 in on this audio file on the discussion of healthcare.

http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=16869086

What unfuckingbelievable arrogance!

I wrote NPR a comment on this and told them how horrified I was to the point of screaming in my car. I also said that if this woman calls herself a Christian, I hope her pastor heard her comments. She should be totally ashamed of herself! She can shove her "philosophical difference" straight up her fucking ass!

Edited for punctuation and addition of another F-bomb!!

...reminded me of the typical "I got mine and screw you" on just about any of the issues the participants discussed...

I just couldn't even wrap my head around that whole diatribe of hers and that snotty tone of voice on top of it! My husband told me tonight he was also yelling in his truck on his way to work when he heard her.

6. Well,
Ms. Kaufman who is single (gee, I wonder why?) and an editor is more concerned that the federal government will take away her right to eat transfats than she is with childred getting breakfast at school. She just plain doesn't think she should have to pay for that. You really do need to listen to it. I can't even begin to do this justice without hearing her voice. It's just fucking chilling!

46. Puts me in mind of one of
John Prine's newer songs, "Some Humans Ain't Humans."

Some Humans Ain't Human
© John Prine

Mmmm Mmmm
Mmmm Mmmm
Mmmm Mmmm
Mmmm Mmmm

Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
You open up their hearts
And here's what you'll find
A few frozen pizzas
Some ice cubes with hair
A broken Popsicle
You don't want to go there

Some humans ain't human
Though they walk like we do
They live and they breathe
Just to turn the old screw
They screw you when you're sleeping
They try to screw you blind
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind

You might go to church
And sit down in a pew
Those humans who ain't human
Could be sittin' right next to you
They talk about your family
They talk about your clothes
When they don't know their own ass
From their own elbows

Jealousy and stupidity
Don't equal harmony
Jealousy and stupidity
Don't equal harmony

Mmmm Mmmm
Mmmm Mmmm
Mmmm Mmmm
Mmmm Mmmm

Spoken:
Have you ever noticed
When you're feeling really good
There's always a pigeon
That'll come shit on your hood

Or you're feeling your freedom
And the world's off your back
Some cowboy from Texas
Starts his own war in Iraq

Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind
They lie through their teeth
With their head up their behind
You open up their hearts
And here's what you'll find
Some humans ain't human
Some people ain't kind

Mmmm Mmmm

5. Damn. She's quite the compassionate conservative.
I loved her bizarre segues -- equating health care to the NYC government declaring transfat are against policy. "I am single, I am self employed, I make a great deal of money through my own. hard. work. I don't want to pay for someone else's child to eat breakfast at school anymore."

Translation: I've got mine, fuck you.

10. It wasn't just the words. You can hear Limbaugh bemoan the same shit every day. It was the passion.
Limbaugh snorts and oinks and rattles his papers and thumps his microphone. But we all know it's theater.

This woman was raging. The emotion was oozing from her pores.

40. Wow, talk about selfish (but of course selfishness is often a big part of being RW!)
I wonder if she'll feel the same way when she has to give up her lucrative work to look after her elderly mother full-time without any help - or when she herself becomes old and sick and can't get any help - or when she catches some serious infection because lack of health-care has caused diseases to spread?

People like that aren't only selfish; they're totally short-sighted.

8. What a cow.
First she's all "It's this EMOTIONAL thing - it's bigger than that!" and then she's got a totally quavering voice when she talks about how much money she makes and how she doesn't want to pay for someone else's child to eat breakfast. She's got apparently two overwhelming emotions: greed and persecution. Well, those aren't emotions, but evidently they're all she's got.

And what the fuck is this about choice? Who's going to stop you from choosing your own doctors, "socialized" medicine or not? What incredible zombie puppets these people are.

36. What really gets me...
... is the enormity of how many Iowans would benefit from a national health care program. The Republicans have hoodwinked the entire Midwest into voting against its own self-preservation, and have somehow successfully convinced millions of people that their dwindling job markets, high crime rates, and generally poor standard of living are due entirely to effete East and West Coast liberal snobs, as opposed to their very own Republican representatives, who have destroyed the American economy through reckless spending and deregulation.

It's fucking nuts, to put it lightly.

39. What's even sadder is
that out here in the middle of the country, most of the Democratic leaders aren't any better on these issues. I heard our State House Rep. here in OK once refer to the bankruptcy bill and intelligent design as "East Coast, West Coast issues."

Out here, it seems party affiliation has little to do with voting against self-preservation so many times. In fact, they'll go so far as to believe that they are doing the right thing for their own preservation. Sad.
