The face of the anti-immigration movement

Deadly Force

Brandishing insults and a gun, Roy Warden routinely threatens Latinos with death. Some observers fear the worst.
(Jackie Mercandetti)

TUCSON, Ariz. -- Sunday services were under way inside St. Augustine's Cathedral. Outside, the summer air was still and quiet except for a few birds chirping in a courtyard near the entrance. But the serenity was doomed. A car pulled up, and a graying, bespectacled man carrying a handgun and a loudspeaker got out, two cameramen in tow.

Working fast, he positioned a collection of lawn chairs on the public sidewalk in front of the Catholic cathedral, then encircled the lawn chairs with what appeared to be a series of pink jump ropes and planted two American flags. With the bravado of a professional wrestler, he then stepped into the roped-off ring he'd constructed, threw down a Mexican flag, and ceremoniously stomped on it, grinding his heel for the cameras.

Then he turned on the loudspeaker and addressed the worshippers inside St. Augustine's.

"You people don't seem to understand forbidden territory, whether it's a child's anus or the American border! You just want to push on in, don't you?" he screamed, his face flushed with anger. "We are going to be driving you back to Mexico real goddamn soon!" Spit flew from his mouth. "Get used to it! My name is Roy Warden, and I burn Mexican flags!"

"The demagoguery and scapegoating of immigrants by public figures in the national media has encouraged the Roy Wardens of the world to be more brazen and violent," says Rich Stolz, a Tucson-based immigrant rights organizer with the Center for Community Change. "As long as fundamentally violent policy proposals like border militarization, vigilantism, mass deportations, and migrant concentration camps go unchallenged in the public debate over immigration reform, anyone with a Roy Warden mindset will perceive that they have a free pass to use the anti-immigrant platform to preach hate and violence."

5. Many tent to blame Mexicans for every thing

MEXICANS, WAR AND THE WAR ON CHRISTMAS
COLUMN OF THE AMERICAS
DECEMBER 4, 2007MACEHUAL: BY ROBERTO RODRIGUEZ

Let's play a game. I ask a question, and no matter the facts, the
answer is: The Mexicans. For example, who is responsible for ushering
in the era of robber baron government in which the top one percent is
raking in the trillions while spreading misery to the middle class and
the working poor? The Mexicans. That one was too easy. How about: Who
stole or who has declared War on Christmas? You got it. We could blame
illegal aliens, but why beat around the bush? We all know it is but
code for brown Spanish-speaking people. So let's begin with the
nation's 21 most pressing problems. Who is responsible for:

1) the U.S. dependence on Middle East oil and the price of gas going
through the roof?
2) there being lots of money for the nation's roads and bridges in
Iraq, but not the U.S.?
3) skyrocketing tuition which is making college unaffordable for the
children of working families?
4) Iraq War Veterans being intentionally cheated out of their health &
education benefits & bonuses?
5) the never-ending Iraq war costing (including hidden costs) more
than a trillion dollars thus far?
6) torture, killings and other rights abuses being up worldwide as a
result of "the war on terror?"
7) U.S. intelligence "failures" on maters of war and peace,
particularly in regards to Iraq and Iran?
8) the president being the most distrusted and despised leader on the planet?
9) leaders of both parties and the media unable to see through the
president's war propaganda?
10) the Army & Marines being stretched beyond their limits, unable to
invade any more countries?
11) converting the EPA into the Environmental Pollution &
Toxics-licensing Agency?
12) more Black & Brown men being subject to the U.S. penal system than
being in college?
13) the mortgage crisis in which millions of Americans are losing their homes?
14) U.S. mercenaries & war-profiteering companies operating outside of
the law in Iraq?
15) the U.S. rejecting most treaties related to war, land mines,
cluster bombs and nuclear weapons?
16) rising poverty, homelessness and close to 50 million Americans
being without health insurance?
17) corporations continuing to outsource jobs overseas while the
dollar hits new lows?
18) food, health and safety laws being ignored and product recalls
becoming routine?
19) cancer, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, asthma, autism and
insomnia rates all being on the rise?
20) Social Security and Medicare being on the brink of bankruptcy?
21) the drought in the United States and the global water crisis?

If you don't know the answer, Lou Dobbs, Tom Tancredo, Pat Buchanan,
"Curveball" and "Screwball" are all waiting to take your call.
When in history have we seen a similar game played out in which.... http://manosinmigrantes.com/content/view/43/49/

11. So it's the Mexicans who started this war on Christmas?
Or should I say La guerra de Feliz Navidad?

Not the least of which those who put out water for them have had cease and desist orders.

So the conservative mantra of "right to life" is total bullshit.

Humans are humans, whether the conservative jerks know it or not. They feel oh so threatened in their comfortable little pathetic lives.

14. They aren't all conservatives
There have been quite a few flame wars here on DU over this topic. So-called progressives are opposed to the immigrants crossing our southern border. And in all fairness, they would point put that they don't oppose immigrants, only illegal immigrants. Of course, they don't seem to understand that immigrating LEGALLY from Central America is nearly impossible.

15. uh -- some of us ARE genuine progressives...
... who make a point of trashing racists.

I think that insisting on an immigration policy that doesn't undercut the wages of the poorest American workers is a very progressive thing to do.

I also think that there's nothing inherently progressive in the "open borders" stance.

18. And push them on it and you find they are against legal
immigrants too, and want the numbers who can immigrate legally to be even further restricted.

Their "legality" issue is pure BS. Not one of them cares about that at all, they just want to keep those brown people out. Even if it hurts the U.S. economy.

race than immigration status. But I do think they are a minority of the anti-immigration crowd.

"Blah, blah, illegal immigrants, blah, blather, blah, Mexicans, blather, blather, blah, blah, brown people, blah, blah, blather, blather."

Followed by sound of rabid dog howling at moon.

What a sorry, pitiful, insecure little man. Apparently all he knows is hate.

Interrupting a church service? How can he even know those aren't citizens? In Arizona, assuming ANYONE (regardless of appearance) is "illegal" is just plain stupid.

17. Let's make Mr. Warden prove that he's "legal." Assuming anyone in Arizona
is "illegal" is just plain stupid.

This asshole's got it all figured out--let's indeed make him the face of the "anti-immigration" crowd.
