MORENO VALLEY - Two women died early Sunday and one man escaped with injuries in a fire that consumed a Moreno Valley mobile home, authorities said. Neighbors said all three were deaf and had connections to the California School for the Deaf in Riverside. Both women who died were residents of the mobile home, a coroner's news release said. One of the women was 21 years old, the release said, but further details were withheld pending notification of their next of kin.

The fire was reported about 5:30 a.m. at the Sky Trails Mobile Village on Perris Boulevard, a Riverside County Fire Department news release said. Firefighters arrived to find the mobile home engulfed in flames. Two sheds and a second mobile home were also damaged. Fire spokeswoman Jody Hagemann said a candle being used for light and heat touched off the blaze. On Sunday afternoon, the pages of a Bible, charred at the edges, were one of few recognizable items in the burned-out shell of the home.

Hall said a married couple had lived there for about two years. They were both deaf and were in their 20s, he said. The wife and a female friend died in the fire, he said, but the husband escaped with burns to his feet.
None of the neighbors knew them very well, he said, because it was difficult to communicate with them. Hall was the one who said they were in some way affiliated with the California School for the Deaf.

Riddle said she awoke early Sunday to a bright light and immediately realized it was a fire. She grabbed her purse and rushed outside where she saw one of the residents had escaped the flames. He was gesturing for her to call 911, she said. Riddle said she called for help then grabbed a garden hose but it was already too late. Another neighbor, Mary Smith, said the couple was recently married. She said they had a cat and several Chihuahuas, which also perished in the blaze.

2. When I went to college in Tennessee, there were always
terrible fatal trailer fires due to space heaters and other ways of trying to keep warm.

Every time we heard sirens when it was cold, we assumed a trailer/mobile home was on fire.

3. and here in CA it never really gets that cold, so I can imagine how horrible it would be
to live in a very cold , windy place..

We did without a furnace one winter because I was too cheap to call a repairman.. and even though it got down to 50 something at night in the house, we managed ok.. but come spring we got a whole new HVAC system :)

4. A few days ago. 3 kids and their disabled Mom died in a fire. Electricity had just been turned off.
The youngest child, just 4, was just declared cancer free 3 weeks ago. The family had moved to Toledo so they could be closer to the hospital for his treatments. The Dad continued to work in their former town some 1 1/2 hrs away and was trying to transfer to a store closer to their new home. They'd only lived in the home since Oct. and apparently didn't have the money to have the electric switched into their name. The electric was shut off the same day of the fire. The father who had fallen asleep on the floor with his son and fiance, survived. I read the Mayor has now requested that no electricity be turned off during the winter months.

WEST TOLEDO BLAZE
Candle started fatal house fire; residents curled up to sleep in cold home

Anthony Diaz fell asleep on the living room floor of his West Toledo home with his 4-year-old son curled up on his chest and his fiancee lying next to him — all trying to stay warm.

snip:

“I didn’t see anybody around me,” Mr. Diaz said. “I screamed for them to ‘Come to the balcony, come to the balcony.’”

But they never came.
