"Who is Valerie Plame?" Mr. Goodman asked.

"Somebody whose name I wished I'd never knew," Mr. Rove replied before giving a perfunctory description of her CIA service and saying he had nothing to add beyond what he's already said publicly. Mr. Rove also maintained that the war in Iraq is not a mistake and that it did not cost the GOP a majority in Congress in 2006.

"Removing Saddam Hussein from power was the right thing for America," he said, noting that what cost the GOP congressional majorities was something decidedly more domestic.

"The No. 1 issue was corruption," Mr. Rove said, ticking off a list of Republican congressmen mired in various scandals including bribery and flirting with congressional pages through e-mail.

But he rejected the notion that Democrats are a party rising, destined to overtake the GOP's dominance in national politics over the past 13 years. He said the core Republican message of homeland security and lower taxes continues to resonate with many Americans.
