I'm in DC right now, and 3 HUGE army helicopters just flew overhead
They looked like big troop carriers or something, they were really big. Keep in mind that DC is restricted airspace, and the only helicopter that flies overhead here is *'s.

OMG, they must have found out it was me that flipped him off for DU yesterday and they are coming to get me. :0

Kidding aside, it is freaking me out a bit because this is a really, really unusual occurance. I am only about 4 blocks from the White House. If anybody has heard anything, please let me know!

7. Not really, they were smack dab over DC and headed towards the WH
If they were going to Baltimore, I would think they would be diverted around DC.

14. Normal for DC
Helicopters are buzzing around all the time. Could be they were doing a fly over for another funeral across the river at Arlington Cemetery. Business is booming (unfortunately) over there.

Rummy (and probably Gates now) used to fly from the Pentagon to the White House. That's a 10 - 15 minute bike ride away.

15. Its not normal for DC, I have been working downtown for 17 years
The small navy helicopters are normal, but relatively rare. Huge army copters I have only seen one other time, and that was on 9/12/01.

21. Up and down the river is different than downtown DC
The river is the where the restricted airspace ends. I have landed at National Airport before and taken the route straight down the river, it is a spectacular site if you are on the left side of the plane, especially at night. These were flying almost right over the White House, that is not normal.

23. This is absolutely normal for DC.
There are no fewer than 12 military installations in and adjacent to DC. I routinely see military utility helicopters in and around the DC airspace.

18. Not over restricted air space.
Working downtown you get to be a bit fatalistic and a bit paranoid. It is too big of a target. I'm not really worried or scared, but I do want to know WTF is going on.

It may just be that Bush was going somewhere and the Marines needed all their choppers so the Army had to pitch in.

They looked like they were heading for Camp David. It probably has to do with the Annapolis meeting. I wonder where Olmert is staying?

24. Happens all the time
Not all of DC is restricted airspace. Blackhawks maybe...I dunno, they're not a chopper I would put in the really huge range. If it was a two-rotar helo it would be a chinook, and that would be a little unusual.

I have two friends who live out at the DC marina and helos running up and down the river is an hourly occurance.

I wouldn't get freaked out about it.

32. I still wouldn't sweat it
Military aircraft can get permission to go through restricted airspace. It is unusual downtown, but with Army/Navy game going on tomorrow I'm not surprised. Probably farrying high ranking officers and other big-wig sorts to the capitol or White House.

33. Well, I haven't seen anything since this morning
I'll probably never know what was up. For those of you that think this is normal - the marine helicopters are normal. These were not marine helicopters. From looking at pictures, I think they might have been Chinooks. One thing that really stood out, other than the size, was the way the copter angled up in the back.

I won't swear it was a chinook, I don't know enought about helicopters. But the angle on the back of this one looks like what I saw this morning.

I don't understand it, but I'm not going to worry too much about it.
