(Washington) Trent Lott, the GOP's second most powerful man in the Senate, is ending his political career.

The Mississippi Republican who currently is serving his fourth Senate term has been a consistent opponent of LGBT civil rights.

In 2003 he was a lead supporter of U.S. District Judge Charles Pickering's nomination to the federal appeals court. Pickering had been opposed by all LGBT rights groups over rulings in which included slurs against gays.

In one speech he called Pickering "one of the smartest individuals, one of the best judges I've known in my life.''

In 2004 and again in 2006, when Republicans dominated both houses of Congress, Lott was a key Senate sponsor of the proposed amendment to the Constitution to ban same-sex marriage.

Both efforts failed, but not before Lott in Senate speeches linked homosexuality to bestiality, incest and polygamy.

Lott also has voted against the Matthew Shepard Hate Crime bill and has voiced his opposition to including gays and lesbians in federal job protection laws.

So for the sake of gay people, if only because we already have so much on our proverbial plate (and have been down this road too many times): It would be nice if there's indeed any scandal behind Lott's announcement, that it involves bribery, or hookers and NOT gay escorts or the likes.

as effective taking down crooked Republicans.

I explained in my essay why I and other gay people feel "bad" is seemingly always connected to "gay," and why it makes us uncomfortable.

When Sen Vitter was busted for prostitution, people didn't start making comments about women or joking about women just because the escort was female.

Had the escort been male, people would have gone ape shit with their comments, and it would have been another scar for the gay community.

Bad is not associated with females the way it's associated with gays and lesbians.

A male politician getting busted with a female prostitute is not a scar nor a black eye for women.

I can't believe you don't recognize the difference.
