The Truth about Colin Powell
http://www.consortiumnews.com/2007/112807a.html

Editor’s Note: As we’ve noted before, false narratives about historical events can steer the American people in directions that are harmful to their interests.

But false narratives about individuals can do the same, often getting the public to trust someone who doesn’t deserve it.

There has rarely been a better example of that than the case of retired Gen. Colin Powell. Across the political spectrum, pundits encouraged the American people to trust Colin Powell.

So, no one looked very closely at the troubling reality behind his pleasant façade. Which made him the perfect choice to sell the Iraq War.

This excerpt from the new book, Neck Deep, describes the real Colin Powell, the ambitious military bureaucrat who followed orders and put his career interests first:

On January 17, 1963, in South Vietnam’s monsoon season, U.S. Army Capt. Colin Powell jumped from a military helicopter into a densely forested combat zone of the A Shau Valley, not far from the Laotian border.

2. Finally, the truth
Media is in the business of story telling. They know that their audience has a need for heroes and will manufacture them for their audience, readers and ratings. They want people to tune in again so they will do what they can to make the viewers/readers feel good.

Colin Powell was one of those creations. The media created a hero and the public porjected their need for one onto Powell without looking behind the curtain. Everyone liked the up from the bootstraps biography. He made the first Iraq War seem moral by virtue of his personna.

All we really had to do was look at his son Michael and we would have known there was something wrong with the story.

4. one of the guys doing the killing came to this area in the early '70s
butch groover was his name and he married on of my fav teachers in high school's pretty little daughter. at the time I didn't know about my lai and I kinda got to know butch, he was one fucked up dude, prolly the closest I come to being shot was by him now that I think about it. he got all paronoid that a friend and I was in my friends car which was an old hiway patrol car that he bought at auction for a little of nothing and butch seen us and flipped out and turned around and started shooting at us he had a long barrel 357 chromed plated pistol. luckily his old chevorolet's engine blew up and we escaped, and I mean I felt at the time it was an escape. he left this area shortly there after and I have to say I or any of my friends were happy to see him go. he just showed up on a construction job I think is how he got here. gives me the willies just thinking about him.

Anyways colin powell gets no respect from me.

11. he did twice in the head last I heard
shortly after the trial of his commanding officer, the name evades me at the moment. I've always wondered how he could have shot himself twice in the head, I always figured sherry his wife must a pulled the trigger the second time. but who knows I'm just glad that is all in the distance past now, the war the whole shooting match

5. I know guys who were there on Getty's staff at Chu Lai.
They have told me that Powell was the biggest ass-lick suck-up, ever.

Powell was picked for progression early on.

And the shit the stirred up in the A Shau never quit stinking. Those 'yards hated us forever. Probably still do.

10. lifer, officer, general officer = ass licking pig
ok, so that's a huge "generalization". he might not lick but only kiss the asses.

i did know a couple of officers who acted like the decent human beings they deserved to be, but for the uniform. unless he was a vencido--beaten or brainwashed already-- or a vendido--an uncle tom-- before he went into uniform, know that a man of color who ascends to the upper ranks of the u.s. army has already so compromised his honor and dignity that the person is to be treated with utmost suspicion no matter the public face he puts forth.

know also, that powell's nightmares populated by the faces of all the kids he ordered to die are powell's just desserts.
