Poll question: Funny accents
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 12:17 PM by Feeney2
Mitt raised the question. Who among you have "funny accents"? Mitt got a chuckle from me with the "funny accents" comment. But you do know that if he was hiring someone to watch his kids from a nanny agency he would have asked about their status. Or would he? His comment about green carding the help was correct, but he is the clown who wants to deport everyone and he doesn't know landscapers are renown for hiring illegals?

12. I've a British, USNorth/US South Heinz accent. I can say 'y'all' and still sound like a Yankee.
In Florida, it's 'Miamuh' not 'Miamee'.

13. I gotcha!
Could you imagine how bad it would sound with the American dialects in a British accent? The only example that comes to mind is the late Linda McCartney (Eastman); she was a native New Yorker and affected a pretty bad one.
That's an outlier example though, she was already set-up w/ a huge inheritance, she can talk how she wants and fire the people who laughed @ her.
There was lots of ridicule of Linda while she was w/ Wings as being not much more than a bankrolling prop for McCartney's business ventures, but as a kid, I bought their albums, they weren't so bad.

6. What if your accent only shows up with certain words?...
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 12:18 PM by Viva_La_Revolution
I still say 'warsh' instead of wash, and I have to consciously not call the sofa a davenport.

8. I moved around every 6 months when I was a kid
and my survival in school depended on my learning the local accent very quickly.

Six months after I got to NM, natives were telling me I sounded like I'd grown up here.

Same thing with Boston.

It's also a help speaking other languages. Visitors from France accused me of having a diplomat for a father and a Parisian childhood.

However, if you're from Alabama or Minnesota, you're going to think my accent is hilarious.

16. My accent is soooo bad...
that when I moved to Connecticut
to work, people would come by my
office and say, "Say something for
me.....(me saying some inane statement)..
What country are you from?"

I am from the lower, Southeastern part
of NC.

17. Moved to California from TN when I was ten
and I sounded like frickin gomer Pyle. By the time I graduated from HS the accent was all gone and I sounded like a third generation Californian. My mom grew up in TN and never lost her accent until the day she died. My dad came to CA from Oklahoma as a teenager and never had much of an accent at all although he once told me he made a real effort to avoid sounding like an Okie so he could get hired for better jobs.
