Bringing down the house: my speech at my class reunion
Edited on Thu Nov-29-07 10:01 AM by Atman
I spent the holiday weekend in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where I was the "headliner" at the main event Saturday night, one of three big parties held to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of our graduation from Cocoa Beach High School. I was asked to do a stand-up comedy routine, something I've never done before. I was nervous as all hell, but it went over better than I ever could have expected. People were coming up to me afterwards asking if I did stand-up for a living now! I might have to hit an open mic night and launch a new career.

Anyway, I couldn't help but throw in a few Bush jokes, this being Florida and all, but I did try to keep them relatively tame. Realize, this was in Brevard County, home of Republican Bob Allen, the rep who was caught soliciting sex in a public park named for him, so I couldn't just let it go.

So, one of the biggest laughs of the night, met with rousing applause and hoots and hollers, was when I mentioned an old classmate who was running for office last time I was in town:

"I see (Joe Smith) is here tonight, good to see you Joe. Last time I was in town Joe was running for public office...as a Republican! Can you imagine that? One of our own, Joe Smith a Republican Senator...hell, I didn't even know he was GAY!"

Man, they were blowin' beer through their noses!

Thank god my old buddy had a sense of humor.

5. Yeah, I wrote it all myself
I didn't even run it by anyone first, I just rehearsed it on my own several times to get the timing right. My notes were 11 pages, and it wound up being about twenty five minutes of material. Fortunately, it was adults only, so I got to throw in some sex and drug references. After all, this WAS the class of 1977!
