I spent the holiday weekend in Cocoa Beach, Florida, where I was the "headliner" at the main event Saturday night, one of three big parties held to celebrate the thirtieth anniversary of our graduation from Cocoa Beach High School. I was asked to do a stand-up comedy routine, something I've never done before. I was nervous as all hell, but it went over better than I ever could have expected. People were coming up to me afterwards asking if I did stand-up for a living now! I might have to hit an open mic night and launch a new career.
Anyway, I couldn't help but throw in a few Bush jokes, this being Florida and all, but I did try to keep them relatively tame. Realize, this was in Brevard County, home of Republican Bob Allen, the rep who was caught soliciting sex in a public park named for him, so I couldn't just let it go.
So, one of the biggest laughs of the night, met with rousing applause and hoots and hollers, was when I mentioned an old classmate who was running for office last time I was in town:
"I see (Joe Smith) is here tonight, good to see you Joe. Last time I was in town Joe was running for public office...as a Republican! Can you imagine that? One of our own, Joe Smith a Republican Senator...hell, I didn't even know he was GAY!"
Man, they were blowin' beer through their noses!
Thank god my old buddy had a sense of humor.
