Henry Hyde died at around 3 A.M. this morning.

NRO has sadly confirmed that Henry Hyde died at around 3 A.M. this morning.

He, of course, was recently recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, but was too infirmed to attend the ceremony. His son attended in his place.

A Republican congressman from Illinois for 32 years, he was a statesmen and and stalwart for life.

33. more on henry
Hyde maintains that the House was constitutionally bound to impeach Clinton for perjury. As Hyde was publicly pursuing the impeachment of Clinton, the Internet magazine Salon.com published a story about Hyde entitled "This Hypocrite Broke Up My Family." According to the story, from 1965 to 1969, Hyde conducted an extramarital sexual affair with Cherie Snodgrass. At the time, Snodgrass was married to another man with whom she had had three children. The Snodgrasses divorced in 1967. The affair ended when Snodgrass' husband confronted Mrs. Hyde. The Hydes reconciled and remained married until Mrs. Hyde's death in 1992. The Snodgrasses remarried in 1969 but re-divorced shortly thereafter. Although Hyde was 41 years old and married when the four-year affair began, he dismissed it as one of his "youthful indiscretions." This infamous quotation by Representative Hyde may have been made as a reference to a similar quote by former Vice President Dan Quayle. In 1988 while a candidate for vice president, Quayle defended his vote as a U.S. Senator, against establishing a cabinet-level position for the Veterans Administration by describing the vote as a "youthful indiscretion." The vote had actually been cast only one month earlier.

41. Hatred
I should be used to it here on DU, but it still surprises me when I read such venom and hatred when someone from the opposite side of the aisle dies. There is gleeful delight in someone's death, which always strikes me as diametrically opposed to what I've always envisioned for the Dem party - compassion, decency, and forgiveness.

Even if you disagree with a person's politics, I don't see any cause to rejoice in a person's death.

Lead a shitty venomous life, and one cannot be surprised when people don't mind your passing, all that much..

When someone dies an unexpected and horrific death, and they were a kind person, there is an outpouring of justified sadness..

When a bad person dies, does their death make them a good person? they just completed their journey, and had their ticket to Hell punched.

57. Difference
There's a difference between not minding someone's passing all that much (as you say) and those who take delight in someone's death, complete with wishes to burn in hell. Hyde's death does not cause me any sadness, but I don't take delight in it.

No, death does not make someone a good person. Of course not. But I still don't ever find myself rejoicing when anyone dies.

And I guess no one on this board would mind if some Freeper over at that site was rejoicing in the death of a Dem icon? My guess is that these very same DU folks would be decrying their hate-filled venemous posts. And they would be right.

52. Yes, Henry Hyde Was a very Hateful Man While Alive
while some here use "hateful" language to express their opinion of a dispical hypocrite that helped drag our country into a hatefest over Clinton's extra-marital affair just so a dipshit like Bush could get into office next term, he will be remembered for his deeds and misdeeds. Guess what he will be remembered for?

Going out of his way to bring down a president for political gain will be his and the conservative movement's legacy.

Yes, you should be used to the hatred.

Why should the death of this old, fat, bald, white guy be news?

He was the author of the evil Hyde Amendment.

It meant that 1,000s of women would not be able to get abortions.

1000's of women died because of the Hyde Amendment.

And their deaths were not news.

I hope he suffered a long time.

Henry Hyde – Winner

As leader of the House Managers and the central impetus for impeachment proceedings over a one year affair
President Clinton had with a single woman when he was 53 years old. The same Henry Hyde who had a six year
ongoing affair with a married woman, destroying that marriage and family claiming it was only a youthful
