So...does posting on DU put me on "the list"?
Given what I've read lately about BushCo, I'd say
it's a safe bet that people posting on DU have
probably made some sort of list of "subversives",
"enemies" of BushCo.

I'm just wondering what this means for all of us.

What does it mean if you are on their "list"?

Are you in danger of being rounded up in the future
or is being on a "list" a mere black mark on your
permanent record?

And if we're on some list for posting on a messageboard,
what does that mean for people like Naomi Wolf, Al Gore,
Naomi Klein, Bill Mahr, Sy Hersch and others who have
been outspoken about this administration?

Just curious about what others think...

2. I don't think so
I think they're mostly about using FEAR to manipulate people, not actual repercussion. Yet anyway.

11. That's a strong possibility...
...if people believe that speaking out or posting anti-government
beliefs gets you on a list...then this serves as a "chilling effect".

That could be as far as this goes.

However, the web appears to be spun. They can define us as "enemy
combatants" and detain us indefinitely without trial and torture
us.

The question is...will they?

33. You got it
The threat is there, and Americans have had to decide how much power it has over them. I think it used to have more power than it does now. A couple of years ago whenever I'd say something about how awful Bush** was, many people responded like a cork had been pulled from their mouths. Their relief to be around "friendly" ears was palpable, and suddenly they were expressing their own discontent. Now people discuss how bad he is openly.

It will have to go to the next level to reign free speech & thought in again. And unfortunately, judging by the previous hesitance, I think it will a very easy thing for BushCo to accomplish if they choose to take that step.

7. I'm sure they try to listen in on Sy, but he has high level Pentagon
sources, who I guess would likely look out for him. He's too high profile to do too much to.

One or the other of the Naomis (I can never keep them straight) has been on the no-fly list previously.... I got the impression she is only periodically hassled. Al Gore, I think they have to leave alone. The rest of us are fair game, I'd imagine.

9. You only need 10% on the list for the other 90% to be proof positive
that they are on the list

Most DU'ers will NOT be on any list... too much trouble... but all your posts are going into Echelon's computers

For many reasons, no I'm not that special, I know I am on the lists... that said

Assuming you are on them is safe,

But if you keep your activism to just bitching on line, chances are they will not come after you

But, if you have participated in street actions your chances go up by degrees, and so it goes.

... who has ever said they hate Bush, think Cheney's a criminal, wish Rummy winds up in the Hague, etc.

What are you going to do with 'a list' that contains over 1,874,234,576 names - to date?

20. That's a good question...
With so many people opposing this administration, what could
they possibly do to so many people?

I get curious when I hear about their attempts to gather information.
A recent DU post detailed their attempts to get amazon.com order
information from thousands of customers.

The problem is---they've got the trap set. Speaking out against
this government can get you "enemy combatant" status. Then, you
have no rights, no fair trail, no access to attorneys and you can
be tortured and detained indefinitely. Furthermore, lately Bush
has signed these doctrines regarding "homegrown terrorists"--which
label Bush critics as "terrorists" and allows their rights to be
stripped away.

You just have to wonder where all of this is leading...

26. I admit that I am...
...afraid.

I guess that makes me weak.

It's very hard to contemplate this stuff when you have small
children.

When Naomi Wolf writes about the countless people who tell her
things that have happened to them--it's enough to make me want
to slink away and not make waves.

I'm ashamed to admit that. But it's true.

And being afraid has its merits - like encouraging people to discuss things, as you do here all the time.

19. Nope. If for no other reason
than they are phenomenally incompetent. If they were at all efficient I would not have been able to board an airplane this past four years or so. but I haven't had a problem flying, so I know they have no idea what they're doing. And witness that they will routinely deny boarding to some five-year old who shares a name -- or a similar name-- with someone on the "watch" list. Or all the times they pull aside a ninety-year old nun, or a 30-year old in wheelchair, or a two-year old-- for extra careful searching. And I's mos freaking tired of the excuse that you never know what the terrorists will do as if these searches were reasonable. They have no idea what they are doing, for the most part.

I was doing some searches for some old books (fiction - late 50's, early 60's) on nuclear war. You know stuff like "Alas Babylon" and "On the Beach", and I'm thinking "Boy is this gonna get someone's attention." Then I log on to DU and see on the home page the article about the USG's dropping of it's request for Amazon's customer list.

constitutional right to free speech and fail to speak out in your own defense (and your interests), then to some extent you deserve what they dish out to you.
