SANDWICH, N.H. (AP) - On the campaign trail in New Hampshire, Democratic presidential hopeful Dennis Kucinich said peace on Earth shouldn't just be a holiday theme.
Speaking yesterday in Sandwich, the Ohio congressman said everyone should be working toward peace all the time. He said if people believe in human unity, they also should understand the importance of leaders who stand for peace.
Kucinich was an early critic of the Iraq war and has proposed establishing a Department of Peace in his administration.

It started with coffee and conversation and ended with a gathering of locals to hear about what Rep. Dennis Kucinich would accomplish if he's elected president.

Kucinich, joined by his wife Elizabeth, stopped at Mocha Rizing, a cafe and local art showcase in Center Sandwich to meet people before going to the Benz Community Center for a town hall style meeting.
"It's not just at the holiday season that we should be contemplating peace on earth," he said to the large group that gathered at the community center. "If we believe in human unity then we should come to understand the importance of leaders who stand for peace."
Kucinich told of being one of seven children, going through periods of poverty where the family would live in a car. He cited this as an example of how the basic needs of people needed to be considered by a president. He supports a full-employment economy, expanded financial aid for college, and changes to infrastructure and energy reduction that could create more jobs.
He also voiced support for a "Medicare for All" system that is a nonprofit, single-payer program that can be used for costs associated with medical care, dental, vision, and long term care. Kucinich said health care is the top concern on the minds of his constituents and the people he talks to in campaign.

Deborah Strohbeen of Effingham has been following Kucinich's campaign from the beginning and had a chance to speak with him on Friday. "He's very sincere, I felt like he's very genuine," Strohbeen said. "I just wish more people would listen to what he has to say and vote for him. He's very hopeful for the future, which I think is so important."
"Some politicians come off as being full of energy and force, but he seems very gentle; passive strength, very gentle man," said Moselle Spiller, a local native who is now a toy designer in New York City. "I like him a lot, he was talking about war and saying it's insane and I agree," said Frank Hoier of New York City, who joined Spiller at the event.
