Criminy!! It took me over 50 years to find out that only blacks have children out of wedlock!!
:sarcasm:

Nation’s children being harmed by unmarried adults

While median family income for both blacks and whites increased over those three decades, an income gap persists. “Between 1974 and 2004, white and black men in their 30s experienced a decline in income, with the largest decline among black men,” Issacs writes. Families beat their parents largely because more households had two breadwinners and because of gains in women’s incomes.

As framed by The Associated Press — “decades after the civil rights movement,” the black-white income gap persists — this is a discrimination issue. Yet as Isaacs noted, “the lack of income growth for black men combined with low marriage rates in the black population has had a negative impact on trends in family incomes for black families.”

At some point, the nation — and more importantly, influential blacks of the post-civil rights generation —really do have to address the harm intentionally inflicted on children by unmarried adults. When 69.3 percent of black children, 46.4 percent of Hispanic children and 24.5 percent of white children are born to unmarried women, the nation has a serious problem.

Rich athletes and entertainers are the Murphy Browns of this era. Fifteen years ago, Murphy Brown was an unmarried television sitcom character who opted to find fulfillment by having a baby rather than buying a puppy. Vice President Dan Quayle created a national stir by criticizing the character for “mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another lifestyle choice.”

Quayle’s point was that role models are obligated to consider the consequences of their actions. Rich actressses and well-educated women with high earning potential can toy with children’s lives, just as rich athletes can pleasure themselves at children’s expense. But when the poor and uneducated pick up the culturally sanctioned lifestyle, it’s deadly for children and for the nation.

1. these stats... wow!
Even wealthy women sometimes regret attempting to raise a child by themselves. It's hard to be a single parent.

"When 69.3 percent of black children, 46.4 percent of Hispanic children and 24.5 percent of white children are born to unmarried women, the nation has a serious problem."

I wonder that the stats are for asian women.

2. The figures are meaningless without looking at the figures for divorce
rates. Way more white women are bringing up kids on their own and if their ex-husbands are poor or unemployed, their situation is no better than Afro Americans or Hispanics. What's more they make up the largest numbers.

9. where can this statistic be verified
There is a heck of a lot of white kids being raised without a father.

I personnally feel the Prison or Legal Industrial Complex contributes to the Black statistic disproportionately. Society incarcerates Blacks at a significantly high rate. slapping the black male into prison takes away ba potential breadwiner.

24. It's no wonder...Bill Moyers just did an amazing NOW segment on racism
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 11:38 PM by live love laugh
The systemic racism in America has pretty much resulted in the broken African American family that is often looked down upon by society. The guest on the show talked about lynchings being held into the 1930's--public events in places like California and Pennsylvania where thousands showed up to witness the hanging of black men publicly.

...Until the 1930's....after 250 years of slavery.

Following that and at this point in history, blacks as 12 percent of the population represent 50 percent of the prison population. The problem continues.

The segment was outstanding.

I hope that a lot of people get to see it.

This is not about excuses. The state of blacks in America is directly related to systemic racism in America.

I have no doubt about that.

26. No, No - it happens!
I saw fictional Murphy Brown have a baby, and BAM, I thought to myself, that's it - I need to get knocked up! I want to be a single parent without health insurance who survives on WIC coupons. I just assumed that I would be simultaneously giving birth to both a baby and a house-painter who would do free daycare for me on demand for the next six years.

Who knew real life could be so different from tv?

I did it all wrong. I had my child out of wedlock. Only thing is, mine grew up to make good grades, does not drink or do drugs, holds down two part-time jobs while taking 12 hours a semester and manages somehow to make the dean's list.

Where did I go wrong?

Disclaimer: I'm not black but I am most certainly one of those society-ruining single moms.

sometimes "toy with children's lives"?

Jeez. He should share a holiday meal at my family and feel the resentment oozing from my s-i-law towards me and my also child-free sister. Seems having babies to please your mother-in-law doesn't always turn out so well even if you stay married.

17. Given that he can't even report accurately what happened on Murphy Brown
Edited on Sat Nov-24-07 04:34 PM by dsc
why should I trust anything else he says? For the record Murphy Brown got pregnant when she slept, one time, with an old boyfriend. The old boyfriend decided to go save the rainforest. That left her with adoption, abortion or keeping the child. Presumedly the same people who whined about her having a child would have gone apeshit over abortion.

18. Wasn't part of the storyline that

"Murphy Brown" was actually married to the baby's father? That they had been separated for years and that he took off again after a bried reconciliation? So the baby wasn't illegitimate but it was understood that she would be raising the child by herself? Or am I thinking of another show's plotline?

21. The article mixes children born out of wedlock with single parent families caused by
separation, divorce, and death.

Is it valid to believe the children are affected the same by all four conditions; i.e. out of wedlock, separation, divorce, and death; given that perhaps some children born out of wedlock might have a father or father figure in the household?

I didn't realize my brother was black (though he does have dark hair, I never realized); somebody better tell that red-headed niece of mine that she's apparently the spawn of Satan or something.

Oh, and a related book recommendation: Single by Chance, Mothers by Choice.
