Only In America Dep't. - Shoppers fight
Man is arrested after scuffle outside store
Scuffle starts when shoppers sell vouchers
Saturday, November 24, 2007
By DAN MURTAUGH
Staff Reporter

Spanish Fort police arrested a 27-year-old Wilmer man after a Friday morning fracas that started when shoppers started selling their places in line at Best Buy in Spanish Fort. The line of people waiting for a shot at day-after-Thanksgiving specials started forming outside the store Thursday night. Police charged James Meriwether with third-degree assault, according to Spanish Fort Police Chief David Edgar.

Meriwether allegedly punched a 23-year-old Fairhope man who was trying to break up a scuffle between Meriwether and three young men, who were scalping vouchers that Best Buy gave to people in the front of the line, Edgar said.

Rich Buckley, who had been waiting since 10 p.m. Thursday for the store's 5 a.m. opening, said the scuffle broke up the boredom for him. "You sit, you wait and you starve," he said, describing the wait.

1. Only people in America fight? - Somehow
I find that untrue and far fetched.

9. Best Buy had tickets for those standing in line BUT
the people who were in line first took ALL the tickets, here at my local BB and many people
were upset about it. They were only supposed to have one each. I know because my son and his
friend went there at 3 AM Fri. to see what was happening. They couldn't get a ticket and left.
So, the guy in your story lost his temper. I can see why, if they did the same thing there.

3. nope. not only in America
there was a story out of China a few days ago where 3 people were trampled to death and 16 injured, in a rush to get into the opening of a big box store.

they fight about jobs, wages, benefits cuts. Hell, right now students across France are on strike because Sarkozy threatens to privatize the public universities.

The USA is hardly the only industrialized nation on this planet that contains idiots...

Where salary is based on intellect and ability to prove you have evolved past our primitive pre-human beginnings. No shirt, no shoes, no brain, no service.

8. The stampede for cheap cooking oil on Saturday left three dead and dozens injured [AFP]
China has banned some sales promotions in retail outlets after three people were killed and 31 injured during a stampede to buy cheap cooking oil at a supermarket.

The victims were crushed as hundreds of bargain-hunters rushed to get into one of French retail giant Carrefour's stores in Chongqing, southwest China, for a sale.

The ban on time-limited promotions by the country's commerce ministry on Monday comes as Chinese consumers are reeling from record inflation.

A directive released by the ministry said: "In order to eliminate safety concerns, companies are required not to organise time-limited sales promotions which may lead to traffic congestion, bodily harm and disorderly conduct."

10. I nearly got into a fight at a gas station yesterday
I pull in and there's only three pumps available out of a dozen, so everyone's waiting and vying for position, right. I sit there and wait for a woman who has left her children unattended in her SUV thing - at the pump, of course - and I'm right there, clearly ready to pull in when she leaves, when this cock-knocker in a huge ass truck pulls in on the other side right up to her bumper, indicating the obvious. Just then another spot opens, I swing in and take it as the person waiting for it just gave up and left. I got out to pump gas and gave the bastard in the truck an earful, and he starts trying to play it tough {to be a matching accessory for his big truck} and claims to have merely taken the "first available spot." So I ask him if the spot looks fuckin' "available" with the woman's SUV occupying it? He's a pussy and leaves. Then to make this routine stop even stranger yet I get inside to pay for coffee and gas, and the credit/debit card system totally fails, and after standing in a long line for ten minutes, we're all told that anything we'd gotten is FREE as they can't process any payments. Too bad I hadn't filled up, eh? Weird day.

12. No pay sounds like a great day to me!
:P

I can understand why you were frustrated by that trucker's rudeness.

I hate when they pump the gas, walk to the car door and then change
their minds and walk slowly to the gas station door and never come back!! :grr:

11. I wish more people would read that DUer's advie from a former retailer thread.
Black Friday is all hype plus a whole lot of frustration and grief. Comparison shop - whether online or in-store. Pay attention to buying seasons. Spring items appear on the shelves earlier and earlier. You can indeed purchase sale-priced sweaters in January/February because the stores have to make room for the cotton shirts. The real sales happen just before the items get sold to the jobber.

Do you have teen girls? I'm going to let you in on my little secret:
