A good response to all the GOPer gloating about the Surge
http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=641208&category=OPINION&newsdate=11/22/2007

Those who are celebrating the success of the surge and claiming that the Democrats would like it to fail are demonstrating extremely short, faulty memories.

Many Democrats in the Senate and the House had been pushing for years for an increase in troop numbers; coincidentally, so did many of the military commanders on the ground in Iraq.

For years, our Decider and his lovable sidekicks Vice President Dick Cheney and then-Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld chose to ignore these requests and denounce them as unnecessary.

If a mere 15 percent increase in troop size -- far less than what most Democrats and military commanders were requesting years ago -- would have vastly reduced the number of casualties and shortened the conflict, as Mr. Elder is claiming the surge is accomplishing now, what would he say to the parents of those soldiers who died unnecessarily while President Bush refused to listen to his own commanders?

1. Who says the surge is working? Is this the same source that told us

that Iraq had weapons of mass destruction, and poised an immediate threat to us.

How much real news do we even hear regarding Iraq in the U.S. from the MSM?

For months the MSM has been telling us there won't be a recession, the subprime crisis is well controlled, and the mortgage crisis is very limited.

First these wise soothsayers told us that oil would never get above 35 dollars a barrel, then 40, 45, 50, 100, and even now they say that the price is temporary.

There is no inflation, and they say it with an honest face even though they are well aware that food and energy are not included in those figures. Who are they kidding?

They lie to us everyday, and we keep lapping it up

The truth is that this is the same crap played during Viet Nam when they were telling us about the light at the end of the tunnel

Well that light is a huge train coming right toward us, and yes, part of that train is an economic disaster in the making, but the other part is that we are occupying a country that will never accept our permanent presence there. We have destabilized the entire region, and have contributed to the high price of oil because of it

What will their excuse be when in 6 months or less the casulties go up again? I suspect we are being lied to now, and the casulties are not as diminished as they would like us to believe

3. there's a freeper e-mail making the rounds, comparing
Iraq favorably to Detroit and DC, and claiming that Hillary, edwards, obama and Biden are traitors. I deleted mine, shudda kept it and posted it. Oh, and George Bush is a hero and his personal idea of the surge is a complete success.

7. Still has a ways to go to get to the level of violence before we invaded
After five years of death and destruction caused by the USA it is getting down to a level of violence not seen since before we invaded.

9. MSM is perpetrating the myth that the surge has worked.
Edited on Thu Nov-22-07 02:35 PM by AnotherMother4Peace
11/20/07 the ABC evening news had the following interview:

CHARLES GIBSON: Let me turn to Iraq.

PRESIDENT GEORGE BUSH: Yes, sir.

CHARLES GIBSON: You took a lot of doubting and rather skeptical questions about the surge. I'll give you a chance to crow. Do you want to say, I told you so?

http://abcnews.go.com/WN/Vote2008/story?id=3891196&page=1

My first thought was: the questions were prepared for Gibson, and second, what is he getting out of asking the question.

War without end

By Wesley Morris
08/10/2007

. . .A raft of documentaries have come along since the start of the war, some of them accusatory, some investigative, some empathetic, nearly all of them skeptical. None is better argued or more searing than "No End in Sight."
