I was never a big fan of John "Cougar" Mellencamp,
until tonite.
I actually remember his first hit song. Not only that, but as a teenager I actually made love to his "ain't even done with the night" - She liked it, I thought it sucked. But it got her hot, and I was a teen-aged male, so...

BUT, I just watched the Colbert Report rerun with the John Mellencamp interview.

I LOVED him! He was so intelligent and everything he said made me want to jump up and say "YES!"

And, I have to admit, when he sang "This Is My Country" sincerely and without all of the studio manipulation, it brought tears to my eyes.

So, in the future, I still may not like his music - but I will forever respect the Man!

5. He recorded two real gems
Rain on the Scarecrow
Lonesome Jubilee

If you're starting to appreciate Mellencamp's worldview, you'll enjoy these records.

10. John always hated that phony "Cougar" name
It was cooked up by some record executive who thought Mellencamp was too hokey. The label originally called him "Johnny Cougar", but Mellencamp got so revolted he at least got them to call him John Cougar. Later in his career he switched from that to John Cougar Mellancamp, and now just John Mellencamp, which he always wanted. I like it: he's an authentic small town Midwestern guy, with an authentic Midwestern German name.
