Alabama Football Coach Saban compares loss to 9/11, Pearl Harbor
Alabama’s latest loss has coach Nick Saban searching for ways to motivate his team.

Citing the 9-11 terrorist attacks and Pearl Harbor, Alabama coach Nick Saban said Monday his team must rebound like America did from a “catastrophic event.”

In this case, that would be an embarrassing 21-14 loss Saturday to Louisiana-Monroe.

“Changes in history usually occur after some kind of catastrophic event,” Saban said during the opening remarks of his weekly news conference. “It may be 9-11, which sort of changed the spirit of America relative to catastrophic events. Pearl Harbor kind of got us ready for World War II, or whatever, and that was a catastrophic event.”

What a jerk! I'm still pissed from this morning when I heard a Steeler player talking about playing against an ex-teammate as being strange cause he had "gone to war" with this guy! Only pro football player who I know recently that went to war was Pat Tillman. Coaches and players need to get a reality check. Players also need to quit wearing camo like they are some kind of soldier. You're frickin' athletes not soldiers and when you lose you'll still see tomorrow!

8. Actually this is a good thing.
It is about the time that idiot football coaches start comparing a game loss to an actual military disaster where lots of people got killed, that the shock effect of that disaster, so readily manipulated by politicians with ambition and no scruples, has worn off.

11. R.I.P. Pat Tillman - a true American hero, who knew he was dying for a lie
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 06:35 PM by SpiralHawk
A big fat lie told by Commander AWOL, Dickie "Five Military Deferments" Cheney, snf the vast network of republicon homelander chickenhawk propagandists, including draft-dodging Rush Limbaugh, Sean Hannity, and Billy BigMouth O'Reilly.

Shame on the republicon chickenhawks. Double shame on them for their lies.

HURRAH AND Allelujah for Pat Tillman and the real patriots who wear with honor the uniform of the United States of America.

12. the thing that bothers me about this
He says "relative to" about every six and a half words.

That gets on my nerves.

Otherwise, this is a non-story. It's just the media wanting to bash Saban, and to bash 'Bama.

ESPN is a lot like FOX News. Every morning the talking points come down. And the "talent" mouth those points all day long. It is nothing but insulting to the viewers.

He was not saying that a lost game was, in any way, on par with 9/11. He was making an analogy.

And I think most ESPN viewers can understand that, if they will only think for themselves, instead of being conned by the hot-air merchants in Bristol.

14. He is an idiot
People like to compare thing to extreme events or use words that invoke extreme emotion to make their point or position seem more important or dramatic then it is.

It's annoying, but it's not like people will stop anytime soon.

15. Well, It seems that some people think sports are as important
as life and death.

What happens when you tell someone like that "It's only a game"? Do they meltdown or what?

17. Sports are exalted as they are as they serve the indoctrination system...
...in that they promote glorification of the macho "gladiator" mentality {which favors the aims of the corporate/state nexus}, and the fallacy of open "competition" and free markets when in fact the playing field, so to speak, is rigged. Sports are also used early on in schools to establish jingoism and the irrational attitude of submission to authority.
