I just saw Alberto Gonzales live and in the flesh (dial-up warning)
Alberto Gonzales spoke tonight at the University of Florida. I'll spare you the details of his speech and give you a summary: it was a forty-minute lecture full of meaningless platitudes and sounded like it was intended as a civics lesson for grade-schoolers. He was not received well. The crowd was extremely hostile and he was interrupted many times by protesters who charged the stage with banners and/or were dressed in Abu Ghraib regalia. Gonzo was unflappable and continued on like a grinning idiot. There were several arrests and I would not be surprised if footage makes the national news tonight. Nearly every phrase he uttered was an invitation for hecklers. Without irony, he spoke of the rule of law, the US's adherence to the Geneva Conventions, equal justice, DOJ's blindness to ideology, etc. Many in the crowd wore yellow t-shirts emblazoned with the word "SHAME" on the back and stood facing backward for the entire presentation. Dispensing with the typical Q&A, it was announced that Gonzo would only respond to questions that were written on an index card and placed in a special box. I put a few questions in there myself and looked at many of the other questions, as well. Most of them were along the lines of "How do you sleep at night?" or "Have you no shame?" When it came time for the Q&A, the moderator dug through the box and was able to find maybe three or four questions that he'd ask. They were the kinds of questions you'd expect a loyal Bushie to handle -- "Who is your idol?" "How does it feel to be the first Hispanic Atty. General?" Hard-hitting stuff.

Here's my summary of the night's events: Gonzales raised $40,000 for his defense fund by standing in a metaphorical carnival dunking-booth for 40 minutes. Good riddance.

Here are some pics, most snapped in low light from a clandestine position (pictures weren't allowed).

5. Even I was surprised
Gainesville is a very liberal town in the middle of a very red state. I expected there to be a roughly even split between pro- and anti-Gonzo forces. Not even close. I'd say it was 90% against, 5% for, and a few who didn't really know what was going on. I'm about to head out to the Alachua County Detention Center to show support for the protesters who got arrested and maybe help raise a little bail.

He will never grace the hallowed halls of the University of Maryland, George Washington, American, Howard (he'd be laughed off the yard in a heartbeat!), or West Virginia. He would be better off speaking at a community college or an elementary school. It's a sad thing indeed.

Happens often. Too often to count. That this is happening to "Gulag Gonzo" is karma. Let the little fuckwad squirm up on stage. His freedom of speech has trumped ours for far too long. If that is the worst that happens to him then there is no justice in this country.

Once he is convicted of purjuring his oath of office, commission of war crimes, and conspiracy to undermine free elections.

He should never be given a scholarly platform.

30. It is not a reaction. It is a statement.
Here's the deal: When we started torturing people, we crossed a line. We have become what we say we abhor. This protester is a patriot. He is speaking truth to power. He is very brave, and he is no idiot. If there are dumb-asses in Peoria that are too stupid to figure this stuff out, then fuck 'em.

This is the perfect reception for that scumbag torturer.

118. Jesus H. Christ
you and others like you need to recognize, tho I thought you surely would by now, that TORTURE IS A WAR CRIME. GONZALES "LEGALIZED" TORTURE. To enable this practice to go unprotested and unremarked, for some in this nation, is morally reprehensible and impossible to do because our consciences recognize the atrocity of this act.

The Bush administration still refuses to accept that they arrested and rendered for torture an innocent Canadian citizen, even after Canada conducted a two year study and awarded the man millions in damages simply by their act of ALLOWING the Bush administration to torture this man.

This is not about politics in those terms.

MaybeI'm nearer to Peoria than you are, so let me tell you that people on the right and left are horrified by this administration, and by Congress' refusal to hold them accountable for their criminal actions. For now, my consolation is in knowing that they are liable for charges of war crimes for the rest of their lives.

So, your posts decrying this action as "not good politics" reek of the worst in this society for many of us.

Some of us cannot apply "moral relativity" to the issue of torture and think that if this nation is so corrupt that it cannot face its war criminals, then we are in a sad place and no political party will stop this decay by politics as usual.

34. Desperate times call for desperate measures
Gonzales is not a run-of-the-mill criminal. Arch-criminals like Gonzo demand an extraordinary response and, given the severity of his transgressions, I would say that the "greeting" he received was subdued compared to what he deserves. This is not a time for worrying about how events will play in Peoria; this man is the living embodiment, the apotheosis, even, of what BushCo has done to our country, our constitution, and our character as a nation.

IIRC, that expression about how things will play in Peoria was a repuke creation. Peorians were offended by it.

From what I can see in the area surrounding Peoria, people are pretty fed up with repukes in general. Many traditional republicans will be voting for Democrats for the first time in their lives.

It's not hard to understand why our true-blue allies in the South get offended by the Dumfuckistan label. Stop the crap about Peoria.

136. It is a non-violent protest at a college campus, they aren't suppose
to be winning over voters, they are suppose to be raising awareness. Which they are doing quite well.

If you think the repug's would put Gonzo in an ad you are out of your mind.

I see posts like this pop up now and then. What get's me about people like you is all the assumptions you are making, assumptions the media has helped promote. One, you assume the protesters some how represent the Democratic party and any protest makes the Democratic party look bad. Two, you think the electorate is like you in thinking this behavior is from Democrat's and somehow done to promote Democrats. Which it isn't it is for awareness not promotion of a political cause or party. The media has you brain washed in to thinking every event has a political meaning, when some of them are actually just for good ole fashioned truth and justice awareness.

I'm sure had you been in attendance, you would have done your best to disassociate yourself from the unruly riff-raff who had the audacity to interrupt a traitorous war criminal's "speech" and would have applauded politely at all the mundanely, tritely correct moments. Probably would have waited your turn afterward to shake his hand and thank him for his wonderful service to our country, just to look all "proper" and everything to "the people in Peoria."

Then you could go home knowing you'd done the right thing for "our cause."

sheesh. I would have to say it's milquetoast, superficially "correct" people like you who do the real damage to "our cause." People who don't know when it's time for a revolution. Who by their properness maintain the status quo and give tacit approval to war crimes, genocide, torture, corruption, etc etc ad nauseum.

and standing ovation. You just solved it all. Let's alienate the electorate. Pure genius I tell you, pure genius.

Do you want to win the next election? Or do you just want to feel good because, in your simple mind, you "stuck it to the man"?

This kind of attitude will put a Republican in the Whitehouse in 2009.

Think people! Think!

74. I would think that about 150 years ago The Supreme Court
Edited on Tue Nov-20-07 12:20 AM by JackBeck
would have already set Lincoln straight about suspending Habeas Corpus.

And that those who are protesting are well aware of which side the Supreme Court would rule in our current political environment.

But then again, given that the internet and digital cameras didn't exist when Lincoln was President, are you able to claim with 100% certainty that someone didn't charge "Lincoln's stage, or a member of his administration, with a Habeas Corpus sign?"

in a freakish sort of way. What a horrible, horrible fate he has prescribed for himself ! How could any man (or woman) live like this? To know everyday you have to go out and try to make a living, or raise money, by subjecting yourself to total humiliation. How apropos, given what he did, what he condoned, what he covered up. A karmic kind of destiny for him - to walk the same steps he made others walk.

But still..would it not have been better, as a father/husband/man/human being, to just FESS THE FUCK UP and tell the freakin TRUTH?!! What power this corrupt regime has to reduce a man, another human being, to this point.

39. About the "no cameras allowed" business...
The staff at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts were very, very cool. They made what could be generously called a half-hearted attempt to suppress photography. You could tell that they were trying to follow orders that they thought were silly. One of the ushers came up to me and said "They told me no photos are allowed. It's their rule, not mine," and winked at me.

The whole thing really was quite a spectacle. It seemed for a few minutes that the show wouldn't go on, so heated were the protests. I think that would have been a shame and would have fed into the Coulter-esque mantra that liberals can't tolerate free speech. It seems that the police and security staff learned something from the "Don't tase me, bro" episode, which happened here at the University of Florida.

Oh yeah -- one more thing. Gonzales is a terrible, terrible speaker. He's every bit the tongue-tied twit he portrayed in front of Congress.

GREAT!

Although it will have little to no effect on a creature without a soul. It's still not Nazi Germany. They aren't going to execute the protesters tonight. But it's too damned close for comfort.

I hate saying this, but it's too bad we can't take the law into our own hands. We could put this nightmare to an end a hell of a lot quicker than it's going to take.

96. It wasn't easy.
I'm normally a very restrained person, but I was filled with a visceral rage -- just from being in the same room as the man -- that I hadn't felt before. Luckily, many others felt the same way. Once the ice was broken and the first of the protesters started acting up (which took all of a few seconds after Gonzales was introduced), I felt free to add my voice to the growing din. It was actually quite cathartic. I realize that technically, this was rude. But as I said before, desperate times call for desperate measures and all that...

... this was just the START of his speaking tour. Something tells me he'll be greeted the same way everywhere he goes.

110. Will Shrub do public speeches AFTER he's out of office?
If so, will the audience still be screened and censored and planted?

Could we ever look forward to a day that we see pictures like this with SHRUB at the podium, or Cheney, et al??

124. "You catch more flies with honey than you do vinegar." Didn't work for Pelosi,
did it? She took impeachment off the table before the food was served, so it
wouldn't spoil the meal - and look what it got us. Nothing!

Look at Harry Reid. It came out this week how many oral agreements he's made
with Bush that weren't worth the paper they were written on. Now he comes clean
about all the little deals he's made with Bush, and what did it get him? Nothing!

That saying may be true under normal conditions, but I don't think it applies when
you're dealing with criminals and murderers (a/k/a Republicans).

But please, please be careful kids, when you do this stuff. As much as we oppose the war and the Bush administration, we don't want anyone getting hurt or put in jail for a long time.

Protest on a college campus!! We have to get the young people mobilized in order to bring these criminals down. Great work, kids. Let's hope this attitude spreads like wildfire.

I applaud these student protesters who can recognize audacity when they see it. Gonzo "lecturing" about the Constitution is very comparable to this:
