they require your email address. Is that legal?

1. Cheezy but legal
It's basically a smarmy way to collect email addresses so they can spam your inbox or sell the list to other spammers. It is to ensure accurate data :hi:

11. I'm sure the intent is to get you on their spam list, still...
it's a little unnerving that some freeper withing the compny who read the results could exact revenge on those who didn't vote for King Dumbyass.

2. I dunno.
Give them a phoney one? I have an old one that I never use for anything else anymore but stuff like this.

Then, when they start sending me crap, I block them. Works great.

14. Point taken...still,
how wise would it be to offer personal info about yourself (even your spam mailbox) after telling who you voted for in the last election?

4. Don't trust NewsMax as far as you can throw them. No legitimate pollster wants your e-mail. nt

15. That's what I was thinking...
I opted not to submit the poll when I got to the "E-mail required" note.

25. Good Guinness Girl, I was in polling for 8 years. Real pollsters don't offer prizes or ask ...
for your e-mail,etc.

In the grand scheme of things, what I think they're doing - and what I think the Zogby online polls are doing - is just trying to see what populations respond to online surveys, to see how they compare with more traditional means, and to see if there is a way to balance the sample realistically. Whoever NewsMax hired is probably doing that and very well might be legitimate, but never give NewsMax the benefit of the doubt. Your instincts were correct.

6. I have a domain JUST to create "throw-away" email addresses
I did this poll with the email address newsmax@<mydomain.com>. Now I'll know who they give it away to. Also, I can set up a filter to throw away any incoming mail to this address. I recommend this to everyone.

8. Webhosts get money for selling E-Mail adresses to Spammers.

Newsmax is a sleazy operation. It would not surprise me to learn they will sell adresses of anyone who says they voted Dem to Spammers. Just to give you an idea how sleazy they are ... Hannity uses them as a 'reliable' source.
