Bush taps Chicago judge
JUSTICE DEPT. | Filip nominated for No. 2 position

November 16, 2007
BY ABDON M. PALLASCH Staff Reporter apallasch@suntimes.com

President Bush on Thursday nominated Mark Filip, a federal judge in Chicago, to the No. 2 position in the U.S. Justice Department.

Filip, a Park Ridge native, will trade his lifetime appointment to the federal bench for a chance to serve out the remainder of Bush's term.

Though only 41, the Harvard Law School graduate has a reputation as a whiz kid. Heads turned when Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, for whom Filip clerked, appeared in Chicago to swear Filip in when he was named to the bench.

Filip had interviewed with former U.S. Sen. Peter Fitzgerald for the U.S. attorney's job that ultimately went to Patrick Fitzgerald. But the senator asked if he would be interested in a judgeship instead.

snip...

If Filip is confirmed as deputy attorney general, two former federal jurists will hold the two top Justice Department jobs: Newly confirmed Attorney General Michael Mukasey is a retired district judge from Manhattan.

1. Just as many here on DU have stated,
myself included, *co can still do a lot of damage in these last 14 months before his ass is gone.

On another note: I expect to see a very, very hungover * at the next Inaugural ceremony.

2. At 41 he can probably do better than a Federal Judge
He's really young and can do a lot more and make a lot more as a think tank egghead or with a lobbying gig.

3. Do CEO's want a lifetime job? No! The GOP considers that as being put out to pasture. To a DEM
it is seen as job security. A basic difference in perspective.

and probably make a ton more money. There may be another Republic administrations in 25 years (but not before that), maybe, and if so, he'd be a contender for a SCOTUS job.

6. Don't forget about the money.
Acquiring a position in a presidential administration is pretty much a guarantee of huge future earnings as a lobbyist.
