By the end of the week, the House and Senate planned to vote on a $50 billion measure for operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. The bill would require Bush to initiate troop withdrawals immediately with the goal of ending combat by December 2008.

If Bush vetoes the bill, "then the president won't get his $50 billion,'' Reid, D-Nev., told reporters at a Capitol Hill news conference.

I never thought Pete Stark should have apologized, he said he wouldn't - couple days later he was on the House floor crying for what he said about Bush/troops.

2. Well, anti-war Jack Murtha was one of the (many) guys who told him to do it.

The Stark outburst was a distraction, his words, while heartfelt, were intemperate and not appropriate for the House floor. Had he said them outside the chamber, no problem.

His apology put the "controversy" to bed. Otherwise, we'd STILL be talking about the GOP effort to bring a censure motion to a vote, even today.
