NOT Made in China
Every time I go to the store, I make a conscious effort NOT to buy Chinese goods.
I found this website that might be helpful to those who are trying to do the same shopping for Christmas.

Okay, I'll be quiet now. I'm going to play in the corner with my memory of Colorforms.

Mattel recalls Mexican-made toy kitchens

Tue Nov 6, 6:57 PM ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Mattel Inc, the world's largest toymaker, is recalling over 170,000 Mexican-made toy kitchens sold in the United States and Europe because small pieces pose a choking hazard to young children.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission said on Tuesday about 155,000 of the Fisher-Price "Learning Kitchen" toys were being recalled nationally.

A European official said about 17,000 of the toys were being recalled. Around 7,000 products have been withdrawn in Britain and Ireland, while 4,900 have been recalled in Italy, 4,900 in Germany and 394 in Austria.

Millions of Chinese-made toys, including 21 million sold by Mattel, have been recalled worldwide recently due to excessive levels of lead paint and other unsafe components.

Toxic Toys
11/08/07

Millions of toys have been recalled over the past several months and Mattel alone has pulled over 20 million toys off store shelves and it’s all mostly because of high lead levels.

For many people, it seems like there's a new recall every week, and it leaves parents questioning themselves what they are supposed to do as they hit the toy aisles this holiday season.

Toxic toys are definitely on the minds of parents this year, and a survey release this week found 6 out of 10 people say the recalls will influence their holiday shopping.

The Monterey County Health department has not seen any lead poisoning cases caused by recalled toys and they say the most common causes here are Home Remedies made in Mexico.

Lead is also commonly found in paint, dust, and soil and the only way to know if you or your child has lead poisoning is with a simple blood test done at the doctor's office.

I keep noticing that companies are Mattel and Hasbro. Do you think the countries of manufacture are simply scapegoats here?

8. I absolutely do.
Even if they make their toys elsewhere, quality control should be here.

9. I'm still trying to figure out...
1. Are their really more consumer products recalls than there were two or more years ago?

and 2. Are their more recalls of Chinese products, weighted for the amount of Chinese products being sold?

11. Vitamin C is impossible to buy if not from China.
In less than a decade, China has captured 90 percent of the U.S. market for vitamin C, driving almost everyone else out of business.

15. you never really know for sure
many of the products are just assembled in China. The raw materials, intermediate components, transport, engineering/design, marketing etc are done are from all over the place.

17. Thanks, HwnN.
It'll come in handy.

I didn't look through everything, but I sure was disappointed to see Playmobil on the "check carefully" list. :-( I love their stuff, and we still have lots of it around here.

Recommending.
