I suddenly feel VERY old (and not a little proud)
My 22 year old daughter is in her first year of Law School in the USA.
She was born here in Germany, still considers German her native language,
never had school in English until she was 16.

She was just nominated to be on the War Crimes tribunal in Sierra Leone,
and is meeting this afternoon with her adviser to fill out the formal U.N.
papers.

My grandfather was a Justice on the Supreme Court of the State of New York,
although he was born in South Carolina. I guess some genes must be more
dominant than others.

Scary stuff, but pretty amazing stuff, too. She will not be suing any Korean
tailors for lost pants, I can promise you that much! More like the next Ruth
Bader Ginsburg, I hope (and bet!) The next generation of progressives has arrived!

5. Thanks, everyone!
I'll skip the suspenders routine--they remind me too much of Republicans (or Matlock).

And I'm a bit apprehensive about her going to a place like Sierra Leone,
but she's a big girl, and can handle herself. We always knew she was a smart
kid, but this is starting to acquire dimensions we never foresaw, and my wife
and I are both "sky's the limit" types to begin with.

8. Congratulations
to your daughter, wife and yourself. I can understand your apprehension as well - so as my Granny would say:"May all the Saints protect her". Let her be safe, successful and happy.

10. I see your from Texas.?
Can you have any more children, please? your family is America, we have all been diverted by our governments and the medias.

humankind is basically good. our governments suck.

Texas is a great state, but what is up with the people your state elects? Wasn't Texas once blue?

11. The people we elect, ummm, yes, well, you see.........
There was once this asshole named Tom DeLay, and he managed to gerrymander
the state so the number of reps we send to the House tipped from a Democratic
majority to a Republican majority, plus when Bush became governor, money from
the education (and environment etc. etc.) budget was slashed (ignorance begets
Republicans), and, well, yes we DO have a problem with whom we elect.

On the other hand Ron Kirk, Ann Richards and Barbara Jordan were all from Texas,
so it's not like we're ALL functional morons. There is hope.

As for my having any more children, well, my wife had cancer a few years back, and
one of the side effects of her rather drastic treatment was the loss of her fertility,
so I'm afraid the world will have to continue to turn with the two girls we already have.
My wife, though very liberal, might object strenuously to my having any more children,
as that would necessitate my straying. If Catherine Zeta Jones suddenly appeared at the
door of my hotel room when I was on the road alone, and demanded to have my next offspring,
I'd consider it under the category of offers I can't refuse, but barring that, I'm quite happy
with both my wife and the children we have now.

My girls both are in school in New York, but they still vote in Texas (both are American
citizens), so will that serve as a consolation prize?

My wife and were out at a concert by Liederjan, one of our all time favorite folk groups.

I'm sure there are plenty of proud parents here. I was just tooting the family horn a bit.
Congratulations are due my daughter alone. She applied to be considered for this program
although she was warned that they took almost exclusively second year students for consideration
in this program. We just encouraged her to go for whatever summer activity she wanted. She
shot right for the top, and although her chances didn't seem too great at the beginning,
she went in there with the attitude "why NOT me?" and sure enough, why not, indeed?

I think if a few more of our Democratic members of Congress had the same attitude, we'd
be a LOT better off than we are now.

"and a child shall lead them............."
