1.0 BILLION DEAD. Estimate – Limited Regional Nuclear War

IMPEACHMENT RIGHT NOW. NO MORE BULL SHIT EXCUSES.

An Assessment of the Extent of Projected Global Famine
Resulting From Limited, Regional Nuclear War

Ira Helfand is an emergency physician and internist practicing in Springfield, Massachusetts, and is on the boards of both Physicians for Social Responsibility and International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War. He has written extensively on the issues of accidental nuclear war and nuclear terrorism.
© 2007 Royal Society of Medicine Abstract

The recent study by Robock et al on the climatic consequences of regional nuclear war shows that even a “limited” nuclear conflict, involving as few as 100 Hiroshima-sized bombs, would have global implications with significant cooling of the earth's surface and decreased precipitation in many parts of the world.

A conflict of this magnitude could arise between emerging nuclear powers such as India and Pakistan. Past episodes of abrupt global cooling, due to volcanic activity, caused major crop failures and famine; the predicted climate effects of a regional nuclear war would be expected to cause similar shortfalls in agricultural production.

In addition large quantities of food might need to be destroyed and significant areas of crop land might need to be taken out of production because of radioactive contamination. Even a modest, sudden decline in agricultural production could trigger significant increases in the prices for basic foods and hoarding on a global scale, both of which would make food inaccessible to poor people in much of the world.

While it is not possible to estimate the precise extent of the global famine that would follow a regional nuclear war, it seems reasonable to postulate a total global death toll in the range of one billion from starvation alone. Famine on this scale would also lead to major epidemics of infectious diseases, and would create immense potential for war and civil conflict.

IMPEACHMENT RIGHT NOW. NO MORE BULL SHIT EXCUSES.

34. It's so amazing that these ideas even come up. Another one is the fact
that a faction of the CIA is the major resistance to these tyrants. Amazing times.

27. To be more specific, It appears that the human race MIGHT
be too dumb to survive. There may well still be time to dismantle the death machine and restore the life processes to some normalcy.

32. Yep, big factor.
They dehumanize the victims - if they're not human, who would notice that they're gone. It's not really "killing," they can tell themselves. More on that later.

What's unbelievable is how many on DU like it too:
"Does anyone doubt Iran is trying to obtain nukes?"
"Iran is developing nukes. I don't give a damn."

18. Collective "Cold War" Amnesia
Future quote:

"Where were the people during the Cold War? The United States and the Soviet Union were in a 30 year standoff armed to the hilt with enough nuclear weapons to destroy the earth 500 times over. There was no war, unless we all missed something. Why? The doctrine was called "mutually assured destruction." Both sides knew that starting a war mean certain defeat. The detonation of an attacker's nuclear weapons alone would be world ending. Everybody would die."

As the US becomes weaker and weaker compared to China economically and in terms of conventional arms, there remains one area where we have the overwhelming advantage: Nuclear Arms.

Will we go quietly into that good night?

14. "Good night"
It's gone from "Say good night Gracie" to "good night, and good luck" in the afterlife.

That is an excellent point. Lead with your strength. Bush - Cheney have temporarily reduced us
to a "one trick pony." What a job they've done, 7 years flat.

12. Evil. Pure Evil.
Some here say that Bush and Cheney have some redeeming characteristics.

They do NOT.

They are both evil.

Pure fucking evil.

They are NOT deranged.

They are methodically evil.

We MUST -- simply M.U.S.T. -- remove them from office.

NOW!

No excuses. No bullshit.

Impeach them both. Now.

indeed just as much as anyone else today-then there are those 11 ton fuel air explosives and all the directed energy weapons plus other things that aren't nuclear but are inventoried, like ethnic/race specific biologicals...

We've got studies showing 1.0 billion dead with one of the options Bush-Cheney is considering and
to defeat this option, what do we get: a demand for 10,000 hand written letters;)

Oh dear. Makes every-day problems pale by comparison, don't it?

So when ARE we going to impeach? What was with that "do-it-yourself" impeachment? I never understood that.

And as if BushCo weren't disgusting enough, the rest of Congress becomes doubly-so by their inaction.

I think I'll go to bed early tonight.

Impeachment won't stop him, he can still press the red button at long as he's pResident.

But would ousting Chimpy change anything? There's still Darth Cheney to deal with. And if he leaves first, Chimp would certainly appoint one of the 8 or 9 Repuke candidates as a new Veep. And they're even more hawkish.

36. Impeach all of them - Bush-Cheney through the cabinet
...and throw in every Supreme Court appointment. That's what should be done but no impeachment of Bush would go forward without Cheney being part of it or maybe first to go. Dennis K is right on target.
