Do the anti-Hillary folks here on DU feel like hypocrites regarding the McCain supporter?
Just a question for the anti-Hillary contingent here on DU:

Do you feel like hypocrites for criticizing John McCain's response to the supporter who called Hillary Clinton a "b*tch."

Many of you have basically said the same thing, and much worse, about her.

Yet, you criticize McCain for basically standing there and not rebuking the supporter.

Now, I personally think he should have rebuked the person, and said "You may criticize Sen. Clinton on the issues if you will. But that type of name-calling has no place in this campaign."

But my point is all the hypocrisy here on DU.

8. That's a sorry excuse if ever I heard one.
It makes no difference that he's a candidate and you are not. That has absolutely nothing to do with it.

It's about hypocrisy, and the fact that many DUers have done nothing but repeat right-wing talking points about Sen. Clinton. Yet, some DUers were quick to denounce McCain for his non-response to his supporter calling Sen. Clinton a "b*tch."

29. I obviously disagree with you that just because you are not a candidate, that gives you the right to
call Sen. Clinton whatever you want. You (and every other DUer who has done it) have no morale high-ground to criticize McCain.

30. Correct
The First Amendment gives us the right to call Clinton whatever we want.

Second, two wrongs don't make a right. A person's character does not determine the factuality of his or her statements.

This is a campaign, and there will be mudslinging. The camps are divided and have retreated into their asinine "us or them", myopic and compartmentalized view of reality. You conveniently tear apart the "anti-Hillary" camp, while I can point to numerous instances of Hillary supporters merely writing off the litany of her legitimate detractions as nothing more than "sexism" or "Hillary bashing". This crap is more entertaining than the Monty Python "election" sketch.

14. Calling someone a "bitch" is no worse than calling someone a "bastard".
Depending on the context, it has even been used as a compliment or point of pride, such as "I can be a real bitch when I want to be."

As a linguist, I find it silly that people want to limit the use of certain words as if they contain magical properties. Use them, take responsibility for them. It's the joy of language!

Biden is a bastard.
Hillary is a bitch.

So, the answer is no. I think the guy has a right to call Hillary a bitch. I never criticized him for that. But I would criticize McCain for not being offended by it. It was impolitic.

It was offensive to you. So if you ever meet the guy who said it, make him pay, ok. But don't say people can't use a fucking (word chosen carefully) word.

Jesus. Imagine putting an asterisk in the word "bitch". If a right wing wingnut did it, I would know what I was looking at. That kind of authoritarianism is certainly unwelcome with me.

Leave Hillary ALONE! She's a HUMAN!

Seriously, I don't think she should be called a bitch, whore, or anything like that. But I do think she's more than capable of handling such insults and doesn't really need a gaggle of groupies coming out to mangle the heels of people who don't mindlessly support her every word or action, as being equal to the dude who called her a bitch.

28. I've never called Hillary a bitch. Even so, there are appropriate and inappropriate
places to state one's opinions, especially when they are harsh. There are plenty of things I might say when talking with friends that are not appropriate to say during a job interview. John McCain is essentially interviewing for a job interview, and should know that his supporters' public comments reflect on him.

51. No, I am against HRC because I believe corporatism is ruining this country.
It's not the person I dislike (she did an admirable job raising her daughter and surviving her husband's embarassing infidelity), it's her position on free trade (which I believe is destroying the middle class AND is a national security issue); her enabling of the war monngers (think IWR and Kyl-Lieberman) and her parsing of words that influence my stance on HER CANDIDACY (not her personally).
