Six boxes of girl scout cookies
All thin mints tucked away in the freezer. I'm set for the year. One sleeve a month; one of life's little pleasures.

4. Ew. I really don't like any girl scout cookies. I bought from a friend's daughter on the condition
that she give the boxes I bought to a senior center instead of me.

8. That's very nice of you
to give them to Seniors. I may do that as well. I'm sure they will be appreciated.

12. I wanted to support her troop but REALLY didn't want the cookies - they ended up using a sign
to the effect that you could buy a box for the senior center.

Of course with my luck I'll end up in a senior center with a bunch of donated cookies I don't like and I'll have no one but myself to blame.

14. The girl scout I got mine from (my cousin)
She was also collecting donations of boxes to send in a care package to Iraq. I bought a couple of boxes for myself and then got 5 for the Iraq care package. It was a very sweet thing for her to do!

17. I am the mother of a girl scout and have written a letter about the content
(partially hydrogenated oils) in all the cookies. My family eats organic and I take the time to check contents of the foods I buy. I don't understand how an organization that promotes responsibility, health and leadership can't even provide one option of healthy product.

My husband sells my daughter's cookies at work, but I do not allow her to sell an unhealthy product. She's in third grade and old enough to understand the reasoning behind my action.

26. i got this from their site...
Girl Scouts of the USA is proud to announce that all Girl Scout cookies are now "zero trans fat per serving" with the same great taste that has made them one of America's favorite treats over the years. While some "zero trans fat per serving" varieties of Girl Scout cookies were available in 2005 and 2006, this year all varieties will contain less than 0.5 grams trans fat per serving, which meets or exceeds the FDA guidelines for the "zero trans fat" designation.

25. I bought a box to make a donation
and then handed that box to the first person who walked out of the store where the girl scouts were selling them.

I didn't want to consume the calories.

27. Most people are not aware how little of the price goes to the Scouts.
The cookie companies manufacturing the cookies make out like bandits, because the cookie company gives maybe 35 cents a box back to the Scouts (this was what I found several years back while working for a newspaper and investigating how much the Scouts actually get from selling the cookies).

I remember the Scouts receiving 35 cents a box for each box sold, but this was several years ago and it may have changed or I may mis-remember -- I hope someone can find out how much each Scout troop now receives from the cookie manufacturer for each box sold.

Every time I try to give cash donations to the Scouts standing in front of me with their order sheets, they are clearly disappointed.

The kids are highly motivated by winning prizes for selling beaucoup boxes of cookies, the cookie-makers make a bundle, and the people who buy the cookies are duped into thinking their money is going to the Scouts when actually it's going to the cookie manufacturer who is essentially bribing the kids to push the cookies.

So while I hesitate to call the Girl Scout Cookie industry a scam run by the cookie manufacturer, I can't seem to come up with a different word. I hope somebody can prove me wrong, and that the cookies have now become a great fund-raiser for each local Scout troop.
