Renter's Insurance
I need to get some. Any recommendations for good insurance company to deal with? Any companies I should avoid? Would appreciate any input.

1. I've got some with State farm. I haven't had experience with claims
with my renter's.

If you have car insurance, check into the rates they'd give you for renter's. Multi-line discount should save you money.

5. I've got my insurance with State Farm
and they're making noises like they're going to pay (I got robbed 2 weeks ago). I'll have to wait and see about what they pay. My policy said "full replacement cost," but the fool who robbed me stole a bunch of stuff they just don't make any more at any cost. You know, junk.

7. Full replacement if you replace it, otherwise its depreciated value.

9. Right, and I'm replacing most of it
and have sent them documentation of replacement cost and receipts for the stuff I've already replaced.

Damn fool stole a refurbished monitor but left a laptop; stole a 35 year old SLR camera and left 2 very expensive digital cameras.

Face it, most criminals are stupid.

6. Erie is a pretty good insurance company
if you live in their coverage area. We've had car and homeowner insurance with them for years.

2. If you have a car, and have insurance on that, ask your insurance guy.
A number of years ago, when I added renter's insurance to my car insurance my yearly rate actually went down. I got more insurance for less money. Nice! I still have my car and renter's insurance bundled together.

If you don't have a car, then State Farm or American Family are good options: those are the two that I've used, and never had a problem with either, and both are pretty cheap. Though I've never had to make a claim on renter's insurance, so I can't offer anything on that front.

8. Thanks.
So far I've only spoken to an agent at AllState and the premium he quoted me seemed a bit high for a $100,000 policy, so I'm shopping around.

3. I have my renters and my car insurance with State Farm
They send me a combo bill with my car and renters together. I'm guessing any insurance company would do the same, but it was easy enough to get through them. It's not expensive either.

Hope that helps. Check out their website for more details.

10. We had a renter's policy with Farmers. Our claim process was satisfactory.
Our policy was for the replacement value on stolen/damaged possessions, not actual value (which is a cheaper policy, but it has a smaller payoff if you make a claim).

We were burglarized and lost a computer, jewelry, cash, 500 cds, stereo system, cameras, a 13" television, one sheet, and one blanket.

The claims process was satisfactory - we were hugely freaked out by the loss, and the adjuster was sympathetic and was a good communicator. We were annoyed with bureaucratic slowdowns at the time, but at the end of it all, we were quite glad that we had the policy.

If you live in an area where burglaries are possible, LOCK YOUR WINDOWS AND DOORS WHEN YOU KNOW YOU WON'T BE HOME. Our burglary took place in full daylight in a 15-minute time span. My husband left the house at 4:45 and I came home at 5:00 to discovery that we'd been burgled. They entered our house through a bathroom window that had been left open a crack, and presumably used our bedding to dump their loot in and carry out of the house to the car parked at the front door. One neighbor did see a car, but didn't make any notice of make, model, color.

It's a smaller company and I'm not sure what states they sell in, but they've been very good.

I've never had a claim on my renter's policy, but I've had two on my car and they were great to deal with. My rates are also very reasonable - but my last claim was about 15 years ago so I'm sure that has a lot to do with my rates.
