That's the report, in a nut-shell, from NPR today. One of the guys on the list (and in this report) is a former "Foreign Services Officer, a.k.a. From the U.S. State Department!

All Things Considered, November 8, 2007 · The House Homeland Security Committee
had a hearing Thursday about problems with terrorism watch lists, the security
alerts that are supposed to stop suspected terrorists from getting on airline
flights or crossing U.S. borders.

Some travelers have run into trouble because their names are the same as or
similar to entries on the list.

Government officials told the House committee that they are aware of the
problems and are working to fix them.

And I'll bet a lot of us plain old people here on DU were mistakenly put on it also due to our mistaken beliefs that our government is run by Liars Crooks and Mafia Families.

2. Remmeber in 2000 there were only 26 people in it
random detainment and release is a classic tool of a police state and lists are used for that purpose

5. I wonder if Senator Ted Kennedy is still on it?
He was one of the first well know people I heard of, back in about 2003, who was on the list by "mistake."
(By "mistake" I mean, I bet they put him on the list on purpose, just to f*ck with him)

7. Big Brother is Watching You, and I'm guessing there's about a hundred thousand DUers on the list...
...if it's that comprehensive. Plus all the Catholic nuns, Quakers, and such.

At least we'll be in good company in the gulag.

Are these fascists insane?

10. Why would they put the names of pacifists on the list? That's ridiculous.

12. Read Naomi Wolf
Pacifists, labor organizers and student leaders, as well as reporters are part of the usual suspects in a fascist shift.

14. Pacifists are highly suspect in time of war, & in militaristic societies at all times....
Of course it's ridiculous. It's abominable. It's obscene. But it is also true.

The cops and the feds watch who attends peace marches, vigils, peace meetings in church basements, you-name-it. If you gather in a public place, they take photos.

One of my late mother's cousins has been a Franciscan nun for 50 years, but both the Denver police and the FBI had her on a list because of her anti-nuke and pro-South American refugee activities.

I'm sure she looks highly dangerous and subversive to the likes of George W. Bush.

We at DU have pretty much known for years that the feds have the capability of capturing and sifting our emails and other electronic communications -- and now it has finally hit the news that AT&T helped them actually do it.

Btw, Hi Agent Mike!

18. Dude, the FBI has the QUAKERS on its frickin "watchlist".
We have a WAR-BASED economy. Our Military budget
is bigger than the rest of the world's combined.
We've had a major war, on average, every TWENTY YEARS
since this nation was founded by violent insurrection.

WE ARE A WARLIKE PEOPLE.

Pacifism is unAmerican, and therefore suspect. :(

9. There is no way that the U.S. has 860,000 terrorists.
I assume this list contains mostly names of people who are not American citizens. Most of the names on the list must live in foreign countries. That is a huge list.
