22. Actually You're Probably Right...Musharaf Needs Her Safe
Methinks Musharraf is fighting not just the lawyers and the courts, but his own military as well. Any harm done to Bhutto would kick his mess into a gear Musharaff couldn't "control". Musharaff serves as long as the general around him say he does. As tends to be the case in military dictatorships (which this has always been), the generals like the power, not the spotlight. If the light gets too bright, he'll be taken care of. It's in his best interests to keep her alive and "safe" and hope the unrest "burns out".

Personally, I see this as a desparation move against his own generals...as the most likely person to take Bhutto out would probably be to his right, not to his left.

23. Hmm, hadn't thought of it that way
I just hope her supporters don't take to the streets in response. I heard on the BBC that would be a distinct possibility if Mushy tried something like this.

Ah, the joys of dictatorship! Bush** will be drooling in envy.

29. She attempted to break house arrest
but they have increased the number of armed police around her house.
Meanwhile a Minister's house was attacked with a suicide bomb -four people died but not the minister.

I expected it to happen the night she returned to Pakistan.

Mushy is not helping his cause by taking that step.

one side says stability is the most important factor, but the other side says democracy trumps all. The problem is that the stakes are so high there.

27. I don't blame her.
She seems to love her country and wants to save it from Musharraf.

But who really knows? Everything is so fucked up over there, I don't really know what to think. But I believe Musharraf is a dick.

36. Yep. I Wish I could have heard what I was seeing on the tv this morning
I was sitting in the (noisy) hospital waiting for a CT scan and they were covering Pakistan. They showed a unarmed woman getting beaten and it literally took my breath away. All I could catch was that they stopped Bhutto's car from leaving her home and that she supposedly called for a new protest date.

I hate this.

whether he did it with his uniform off. That will be the KEY question asked by the media. Very bad news.

20. Here's the latest from BBC
Bhutto house surrounded by police

<snip>
The house of Pakistani opposition leader, Benazir Bhutto, has been surrounded by police, hours before her party is due to hold a mass rally.

She has not been formally placed under house arrest, and police say the measure at her residence in Islamabad is for her own safety. <snip>

This would be considerably less dangerous if nukes were not sitting there. Let the consequences be damned, we should not have any nuclear armed state vulnerable to overthrow by islamic fundamentalists.
