It's All Over. The Line Has Been Crossed
I just returned home from the grocery store, where one of my most frightening nightmares became reality:

An Elevator-Music ("Muzak") rendition of "The Wind Cries Mary" by Jimi Hendrix was playing through the store speakers.

We're doomed.

:scared:

1. They should have just played the original. It would have been a far
better experience for all concerned.

I honor your psychic stamina for surviving the Muzak version.

11. Thank you!
The original would have been great. Something about that song just mellows me out...affects the brainwaves, or something; I could use that in a place like the grocery store!

FWIW, in light of at least one other thread in GD tonight: I'm 35 years old..."big time" Gen-X'er. My parents are Boomers but "observed from the sidelines", so-to-speak (i.e. A lot of 60's/70's era "rock and roll" I discovered on my own). I got really into "classic rock" when I was about 17 (Led Zeppelin in particular, plus Hendrix, Steppenwolf, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Aerosmith, etc.) Great stuff.

15. I love it that you found a lot of that music on your own.
It's an era for adventure to start with, and a great deal of the music kind of supports that claim.

Good for you.

Next time you're in that grocery store, drop a hint in the suggestion box that you'd prefer they dump the Muzak feed and offer originals only.

Tell them they can start with "L.A. Woman" by the Doors.

6. I'm pissed off that I've never heard Eno's "Music for Airports"
in an airport. It could only improve the experience.

18. Ahem. We do have the album on vinyl.
I keep it handy in case the house is ever expropriated for an airport terminal. Hey, it could happen. The realtors all say it's a hot neighborhood.

21. Ahem, I knew that ...
... what makes you think I didn't KNOW that?

P.S. You'll have to STOP smoking in the kitchen, now that it's been designated as Terminal 2, International Flights.

I would also advise not drinking the coffee now being served in the kitchen - umm, Terminal 2, as it will now cost you $15.56 per cup (tax and tip NOT included).

12. WTF?!?! "Let's Go Crazy"?!?!
How?! How was it even POSSIBLE to turn that into Muzak?! I mean...what instruments would be used for what?

I minored in Musicology when I was in college, but this one baffles me!

14. I see your "Let's Go Crazy" and I raise you...
...the Pogues' "Fairytale of New York." I shit thee not.

I have a friend who claims to have once heard the Velvet Underground's "Heroin" but I choose to stay skeptical lest the abyss look back into me.

10. My local grocery store
Is actually rocking out right now. They had Madonna hit that was on the Die Another Day (Bond movie) going...one of my fave songs. After that, it was Cult of Personality by Living Color, another good rocker from back in the 90's (it was 90's, right?)

13. The local Walgreen's plays the Stones,
ZZTop, Aerosmith, and even 80's New Wave (come to think of it...being a DRUGstore, the music selection makes sense), but all songs were played in their original version--not Muzak. I like it!

Clearly based on the Devo version, that is.

It was tough, but we were good. :)
