Australian shares have fallen to their lowest level in six weeks as concerns remain about the US mortgage crisis.

A slump on Wall Street overnight rattled Australian stocks, which plunged 2.3 per cent in morning trade.

The All Ordinaries Index fell 146 points to 6,581 while the ASX 200 dropped 163 points to 6,528.

Fears about the health of global credit markets have re-ignited, while rising oil prices and the weak US dollar have shaken markets.

Commsec chief economist Craig James says the fallout from the subprime mortgage crisis is still being felt across the globe

All of those poor munchkins dancing in the mud!
