Kansas lawyer sues President Bush
TOPEKA, Kan. -- A lawyer arrested last year after holding an anti-war sign at a political rally where President Bush spoke has filed a lawsuit, claiming the chief executive violated his constitutional rights.

Dennis Hawver, an Ozawkie attorney who has run as a Republican and a Libertarian in unsuccessful bids for Congress and the governor's office, filed a federal lawsuit Monday against Bush and the Kansas Republican Party. The lawsuit alleges that Hawver's Nov. 5, 2006, arrest at the Kansas Expocentre rally was a "politically motivated violation of my civil and constitutional rights especially regarding my First Amendment right of political expression."

About 7,000 people attended the GOP rally meant to help then-Rep. Jim Ryun keep his Second Congressional District seat. Ryun lost the race to Democrat Nancy Boyda.

Hawver said he was arrested after holding up a sign stating "Stop War" when Bush was speaking. He said a Kansas Republican Party representative instructed two men to arrest and remove him from the gathering.

1. This should be fun - a Republican attorney "abusing" the legal system
and suing a fellow Republican. My oh my.

He ran for office as a Libertarian.

3. Whatever. I'm sure he's one of the folks who froths at the mouth about
"frivolous lawsuits" and "trial lawyers", demanding tort reform and limits on jury awards to protect big business).

4. I get the Hawvers mixed up.
Is this the guy who does the Hawver Report on the statehouse or is that Martin? I don't know, can't afford to subscribe but I wish I could. Must not be the same guy. I think they are brothers but I can't say for certain. I went to school with one of them....gosh they must be memorable!
