Has anyone seen Bill Maher in Las Vegas?
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 04:16 PM by policypunk
I am going to be in Las Vegas for a wedding just before Christmas and I see Bill Maher is performing on the 21st and 22nd.

Has anyone been to this show? What should I expect?

5. Yes. Last spring at the Hard Rock
It was a great time, and great to see Bill in his stand-up persona which is substantially different than Real Time. Although most of the material is basically a rehash of the New Rules rants and opening monologues, it is still fun.

However, the seating was just folding chairs so it was a bit cramped and uncomfortable. After the show, getting out was tough--a couple other events I think let out at the same time so it was just a shoulder-to-shoulder mass of people moving toward the main casino area. We waited like 40 minutes in line for a cab back to our hotel.

My suggestions: pee first and sneak a drink in with you. Once you are seated you are not getting up without annoying a lot of people. Stay at the hotel where the show is--I assume it's going to be the Hard Rock? If so be sure to give yourself plenty of time to cruise around and look at all the musical memorabilia.

Here's a trip report I wrote for Bartcop:

6. thanks,
I was under the impression the Hard Rock was really fancy, seems expensive for a folding chair.

7. Hard Rock... Fancy??
LOL! A hotel/casino is a hotel/casino... they all look the same, and actually the Hard Rock is getting a little up there in age. They need to do a little re-vamping if they want the fancy label attached. But then again, I've had my share of hotel/casino's and they are all pretty blah in my book. I prefer the cheap hotel that takes my puppy and is close to outdoor activities... not slot machines. :)

8. you haven't been to Vegas much have you?

:D In Vegas expensive doesn't automatically mean fancy.

Some of those venues are just horrible. Others, like the Penn & Teller showroom are awesome. Regardless they charge a lot for tickets there is no getting around that.

The worst was several years ago I saw Mort Sahl at the Riviera. The room was set up with those long folding banquet tables, not the little round tables one would expect to set the atmosphere for a stand-up show. The two drink minimum? As you walk in, grab two glasses from the ones set out on the table, cheep wine, red or white those are the only choices. The stage was set up with a mic'd podium--like it was for a Toastmasters meeting. And the proverbial comedy club brick wall? Brick print wall paper hung from a wire with binder clips.

And then poor old Mort; he hadn't updated his material since the Nixon administration.

10. It's my second least favorite city in America...
I am a little more a Disneyland guy than a Las Vegas guy, I wouldn't be going if it wasn't for the wedding.

11. if you get a chance to go out to dinner try Red Square at Mandalay bay
it's pricey but delicious and if you like vodka they have about 300 different kinds.

12. You can't help but have a good time!
There are loads of things to do that don't involve gambling. If you like cars, check out the Auto collection at Imperial Palace. If you haven't seen the Bodies Exhibit (that's the human bodies in various stages of dissection frozen in epoxy)it is well worth it.

one of my favorite places to eat is Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville...on the strip across from Caesar's Palace. Freemont Street has a fantastic multimeda show on a three block long overhead screen and it is the best people-watching in the whole world.

If you're a Star Trek fan, the Star Trek Experience at the Hilton is the most incredibly coolest thing EVER! And there is Penn & Teller's show over at the Rio--also very cool.

let us know how you liked it!

13. Penn and Teller is a done deal,
we are actually staying at the Rio and were really happy to find out that shows were still running that close to Christmas.

I have been to Las Vegas a few times over the years, but rarely for anything other than confrences where every last minute was planned with organized activites and I went with my parents when I was 19 for all the fun that was.

Thanks, I really appreciate the input
