Federal Charges Against Kerik Expected Friday

NEW YORK -- Federal law enforcement officials are expected to announce criminal charges this Friday against Bernard Kerik, the former NYPD commissioner under Rudy Giuliani, WNBC.com has learned.

Court officials are planning for Kerik's possible arraignment at the federal courthouse in White Plains, N.Y., once the charges are filed, sources familiar with the case said.

Kerik is expected to face federal tax fraud charges, among other counts, officials have said. Kerik has been under federal investigation amid allegations that while a city official, he accepted $165,000 in free renovations to his Bronx apartment from a construction firm that was seeking business with the city. Kerik agreed to plead guilty to state charges last summer and pay a fine.

Kerik's problems came to light just as he was nominated to be Homeland Security Secretary under President George Bush. His legal troubles have followed Rudy Giuliani's presidential campaign.
