6 in 10 Consumers See Recession: ARG
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20071107/ts_nm/retail_recession_dc_2;_ylt=AokAYYlZQ_Pkab9KMR5bB8kE1vAI

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Six in 10 consumers say a recession is likely in the next three to six months, according to a survey on holiday spending released on Wednesday.

In a telephone survey by America's Research Group, 45.7 percent of 1,000 respondents said a recession was "somewhat likely," and 14.3 percent said it was "very likely." Forty percent said a recession was "not likely."

...snip...

Still, even with questions about the strength of the economy, the wealthy seem intent on spending for the holidays, no matter what.

For those who said they will spend more than $1,000 this holiday season, 46.8 percent said nothing could make them spend less than they planned.

So, no matter what it costs, the Bushes and the Cheneys are hell-bent on war with Iran?

1. Where was the "We've been in a recession for several years" option?
We've been in a recession for several years.

2. As usual, we will know that the recovery has started,
when we see a bear on the cover of Time Magazine.

Public opinion is a lagging economic indicator. If people think we are heading into a recession, it means we ARE already in a recession.

5. Retailers are sweating bullets
They're attempting to stimulate sales before consumers realize they're faced with a choice of paying for heating oil and gas or holiday spending. Because in more and more cases they can't have both.

To put this perspective, consumer spending accounts for around two-thirds of U.S. economic activity with retail being the second largest industry in the US. Retail sales in the US are around four-trillion dollars a year. Around 18-20% of those sales each year occur during the holiday shopping season.

What we're looking at is a consumer driven economy faced with potentially crippling inflation.

If we're lucky we'll get off easy with just a recession.
