Missing Cemetery Corpse May Be Linked To Witchcraft
Missing Cemetery Corpse May Be Linked To Witchcraft
Police: Some Believe Stolen Skull Grants Powers

A body dug up and removed from a graveyard in New Hampshire may have been snatched by people who practice witchcraft, according to police.

"We believe it's something other than someone digging (the body) up to steal jewelry," Lt. Darren Remillard said.

Investigators said the 1820 grave of Sarah Symonds was dug up at the Bible Hill Cemetery in Hillsboro on Halloween night.

...

Police said some believe that if a skull is stolen on Halloween night, it will grant powers to the owner.

3. Not any witchcraft I've heard of, and I'm a Pagan.
This sounds like that old 1980s hysteria again. For the record, Wiccans and other Pagans do not dig up dead bodies. We don't believe that skulls grant special powers. We don't try to call up the devil. We don't even believe in the devil. We don't cast evil spells on people. That's all a bunch of nonsense.

6. It's amazing they can get away with writing that headline without a shred of evidence or proof.
But I guess it's pretty much par for the course with the MSM today.

7. What about some versions of Palo Mayombe or Santeria?
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 11:39 AM by derby378
We had a pretty gruesome case a while back on the Texas-Mexico border, where an American was kidnapped by some Palo Mayombe brujo named Adolfo Jesus de Constanzo who lived in Matamoros (across the border from Brownsville). Constanzo ordered one of his disciples to split the poor guy's head open with a machete, and I think they boiled everything off the skull and just kept the skull as some kind of amulet or totem or whatever. It's been a few years, so the details may be hazy, but that's what I recall.

I know that most practitioners of Yoruba and its children (Voudoun, Santeria, and Palo Mayombe) have absolutely no interest in the black arts, but once in a while you see some wacko pop up who uses the rituals for evil instead of good.

term "witch".

15. I know the ancient celts
kept the heads of their rivals in battle. Some of the old stories talk of the skulls giving advice. So there might be someone who decided they might want one. There are crazies out there of every religion. Actually there are crazies out there period.

21. Santeros and Vodounisantes DON'T pilfer remains from graves
That is surely Palo Mayombe. It is very common in that tradition.

Of course, given that this is New Hampshire, I'm guessing it's likely just bored teenage delinquents.

I mean come on, they're already glued to computer, you don't need to say that they're involved in snatching bodies! Oh witchcraft, not Warcraft? Nevermind.

10. You mean teenagers who are playing at witchcraft
Honestly, these religionists give far too much credit to the dark arts.

A lot of us tried them as kids, although we didn't go nearly this far, and found out what people have found out through the centuries: IT DOESN'T WORK.

19. Wrong. Teenagers playing at "witchcraft" wouldn't dig up skulls.
Teenagers playing at something else might dig up skulls, but not witches.

This shit seriously makes me want to smack people.

This has NOTHING to do with Paganism, Witchcraft, or Wicca.

More useless "some people" information to make the general public fear and demonize us.

23. Ignorant reporters
Edited on Wed Nov-07-07 03:53 PM by Chovexani
The report is lazy and sensationalistic, as usual. But I wish Wiccans would understand that Wicca and Witchcraft are not synonymous, and they do not have sole ownership of the word. People have been practicing witchcraft since there was a human and a plant or a rock to work juju with, and comparatively few believe in stuff like the Rede and the Threefold Law. Stuff like Palo Mayombe was around before Gerald Gardner was a sparkle in his mother's eye. There are witches of every religion and moral strain all over the world and some of them do engage in activities Wiccans would be disgusted by. I am not trying to bash you or anything, I understand the frustration even though I'm not Wiccan anymore (I am an Eclectic Witch that leans toward Indo-Paganism and I cringe anytime I see reports like this). But we're not the only ones out there.

Not to say it was witches at all, this was probably just bored frat boys pulling a prank.

30. Of course we aren't
I hope my post didn't come across as feeling like witch= Wiccan only. If it did, that wasn't my intent. My religious tradition is a rather small one in the scope of things, but I have friends that encompass a broad spectrum of beliefs, I still think of all of them when I refer to "us" or "our". Paganism as a whole has to put up with misinformation like this all the time and it's irritating.

18. It's not witchcraft
necrophilia maybe, perhaps archaeology, but not witchcraft. I say that as an ordained high priestess and teacher. Some believe that if they vote Republican often enough they will live in a mcmansion, but it's about as likely to happen as getting powers from a skull dug up on Halloween night.

25. Of course...
It may be linked to an alien invasion. It may be linked to a secret Scottish terrorist organization. It may be linked to Illuminati initiation rituals.

I belive it may be a mass hallucination and there's been no grave disturbed at all.

God I hate sensationalist media.
