And apparently picked up a coupkle of seats in the House

8. Actually the trend is that the local races follow national trends in most cases.
For example, Republicans were winning Virginia more often than not on the presidential level for years before making huge inroads on the local level. Same thing for the rest of the south. Similarly, Democrats started winning heavily in the north on a presidential level before truly consolidating state and local races there.
